- My model of MX-5 is: __ ND1 2.0 Sport NAV
- I’m based near: __Warwick
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Engine Rebuild
I’m doing recently lot of track days running engine at high rpms. Worried might blow the engine, need a reliable engine rebuilder who can check and advise in Warwick/ with in 20 miles.
If you can raise your 20 mile limit a little higher, I’d get in touch with Performance Link who are based just outside Tewkesbury.

As long as you don’t have any overheating issues and do your oil changes and keep the oil brimmed, I can’t see why you should have problems. What exactly do you want them to check?
Higher RPMs is going to increase wear, obviously, but the red line is still well within safe working limits of the engine. Mazda built these cars knowing that people were going to use them as sports cars, after all.
There is a kind of clatter noise from engine bay, I’m not sure is it belts or from the engine
More than that, I thought that the engine was the same in the MX-5 cup car. Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong.
Well, have a good look around in the engine bay and do the ol’ screwdriver stethoscope. And make sure everything is tight and nothing is knocking into something else, such as the battery cover or the air filter box.
Is it a rhythmic clatter? Increase with revs? Happen all the time or only when fast, or slow, or round corners, or what? A clickety-clack kind of clatter, or a tick, or more of a knock? You can tell if it’s belts or pulley by simply loosening the belt and taking it off, bearing in mind that it will run on only the battery without the alternator spinning and this won’t work for the crank pulley unless you unbolt the pulley. Belts and pulleys tend to squeal and grind, although if a pulley is loose or has any sort of balancing/vibration dampening mechanism (talking crank pulley again) that has perished, it might clatter a bit.
How long has it been making this noise?
I’d say the most common “clatter” noise is a bit of valve tappy-tap, which is more of a tick clatter. Make sure your oil is brimmed and allow the car to idle for a good while to help stop it getting any louder, maybe stop it completely. Don’t forget that engines are full of metal-on-metal- contact and stuff igniting, so actually do make all sorts of noises when you actually take the time to listen. If it’s any consolation, my recently acquired 1.8 NC definitely has a bit of clickiness to the engine, but I am certainly not worried.
Again, what is it you want an engine rebuild service to check? Your valves might make a bit of ticking and that’s not worth a rebuild, and you might find a rebuilt engine starts to tick pretty soon or will tick anyway or ticks sometimes. If something is wrong in the cylinders then by the time you hear knocking it’s already too late and you ned a rebuild. Have you lost any power? If no then your valves are seating properly and you haven’t lost any compression or broken a con-rod or spun a shell bearing, so any honest engine builder would tell you that a rebuild is not in order, unless you particularly want something like valve lapping.

I will try to record a video and post for reference,
