Remap for a small performance gain

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC 2.0
  2. I’m based near: __Colchester
  3. I’m looking for technical help/comments - _Superchips remap.

Hi all
Has anyone had experience of a remap. It’s only mild about and extra 15/20 bhp and similar torque increase. I do not want a major upgrade and loose the characteristic of the car but interested for a little more responsiveness. Has anyone done this? The other thing for more performance would be to change the manifold too, but was considering the remap first albeit a small gain. Interested to hear your thoughts

For that 15-20bhp gain, you’d need an uprated manifold in place. The gains will mostly be found because of that change, as the standard version is known to be quite restrictive.

My old NC2, with an IL decat manifold and a remap gave 183bhp peak. I didn’t have access to a dyno for any pre-run figures, but that fits in with around a 20bhp peak BHP increase, if you assume the std car would have returned around 158bhp.

Also just to say that 15-20bhp isn’t a ‘mild’ gain on an N/A setup, which is why you won’t get that improvement from a remap alone. If you don’t want to make any other hardware changes, an alternative map file would still give you some driveability and responsive improvements. You could say it’s not really about headline figures anyway

Cheers,
Steve

I wouldn’t use Superchips, use an MX5 tuner such as BBR, Roddisons or PerformanceLink.

A total waste of money, the claims are dubious based on just a remap. Turbo engines can respond very well to a remap, but N/A engines yield 5bhp if you’re lucky. A number of remap companies also tweak the throttle response so it feels faster.

N/A engines need hardware upgrades to unleash good power gains.

Having now had a look at Superchips website (it’s been a few years!) their remap claims on a standard NC are ridiculous:

So if you’re interested in taking this forward @James_Cooper and learning more - talk to the companies suggested above by @BlueAgave first!

Roddisons upgrade on my ND 1 in 2021 was modest - a remap and a new exhaust manifold. But the effect was very impressive - a little more power (c20bhp ) but a significant increase in torque, and a much more linear torque curve. Add an engine that is much happier to zip to the redline , and better mpg and you have a happy customer. Recommended , and remember it’s not only headline figures that count but overall driveability.

As mentioned above, a good quality manifold from BBR, Power Flow or IL Motorsport is the way to go together with a remap. Best bang for buck for the NC.
