I have a tear in the bolster of my MX5 mk 3.5 drivers seat.
I purchased a replacement (passenger side) cover ( top half of seat cover / foam) to use the material for an upholsterer to mend my old one.
Can anyone advise me on how to get the old top part of seat cover / seat off please?
I can see where the cover undoes at the back but can’t tell how to remove it off the frame.
Help please!
Thanks
Kerry
You’ve obviously got this far ![]()

The bottom edge of the rear of the seat panel is held in with a plastic strip along the base of the seat, it tucks under a metal lip and keeps the cover firmly in place. You need to locate this and prise it off with a flat screwdriver. The front side of the cover, tucks under at the join between base and backrest, going through the join to the rear of the seat, another plastic strip, sewn along the bottom front edge of the cover, is held in place with hog rings. These need to be removed with strong taper nose pliers and possibly a flat screwdriver, there’s only three I think?

This frees the front face of the cover. Pull it upwards at the front towards the headrest, you will see more plastic strips and depending on the stitching on your seat back, a seam will either run vertically in the middle of the panel, or there will be straight or curved seams running horizontaL. Either way, there are more strips and hog rings where the bolster meets the seat back panel, running vertically, where the plastic strips are sewn in, they attatch to the seat with more hog rings. Remove these and this will allow the seat cover to be removed. You will have to remove the seat belt guide from the outer top edge of the seat too, it is held in place with a single Phillips type screw.
My seat back with vertical seams, you can see where the hog rings have been where the foam is marked.

You can buy hog ring pliers and hog rings off eBay etc. You could use cable ties too.
My hog ring equipment for info.
