Remove, repair or replace lose lining in under body cover

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND
  2. I’m based near: Oxfordshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Heat shield

My wife noticed something under the car which turned out to be lining that came lose from a panel.

Search the internet I found an ebay listing for “MAZDA MX-5 ND 2015-2024 MK4 UNDERTRAY UNDER BODY COVER SPLASH GUARD 1” which matches the panel exactly, but it’s second hand.

I tried looking for a new part, but nothing matches that name.

I’ve also found non original replacements labelled as “gearbox undercover” , but it has no lining like the original part

I also found a part for NC labelled “Mazda MX-5 MK3 Under Engine Sump Access Panel”, again I cannot find a part called that for ND.

So my questions then are:

  1. Do I replace the part with the OEM, and where can I get a new one ?
  2. Do I just glue the lining back on the existing panel?
  3. Do I just remove the lining?
  4. Do I replace it with the non EOM panel?

I’m guessing the lining is there for a reason, heat shield would be my guess, but I’ve also seen an after market panel which is aluminium , but I’m guessing the choice of metal is to pull heat away from the gearbox.

It needs replacing, nothing wrong with using a used part. How old is the car?

It is very difficult to understand how this part has become detached so I think you need to get the car up in the air and have a good look at what has been going on. There may be other issues under there.

I’ve recently took that panel off mine, I noticed a small padded piece stuck to it. If you’ve still got the piece just reattach it, glue it back on.

The car is almost 10 years old, so it’s likely the glue is just old and the lining came lose.

That’s what I was thinking. I’ll look into some automotive heat resistant glue options.
