Removing Bose unit from Dash Mk3.5

I have bought an XCARLINK unit that i can plug in a memory stick to play music that I have downloaded to it. It comes complete with wiring and instructions on how to remove all necessary plastic trim including the centre console. The last part after removing the screws that hold the radio unit in place says to remove the radio with a good pull and it should come out.

However, after removing the two screws the radio does move a bit but refuses to come out. I have put substantial force and even tried levering it out but it feels as though something else is holding it in place. I am loath to put masses of effort in for fear of breaking it.

Does anyone know how this thing is removed please. I have the Kuro edition 2012, it has the radio with a 6 cd changer.

Many thanks.

Dennis

I believe there is another bolt on one side, have a look here. Apologies if you’ve already done this

Hi Paul,

Thanks very much for that, my unit looks the same in shape but not in appearance. However, as you say, there is another screw on the video which the guy highlights and is supposed to be on the right hand side. I have put it all back together so will have to try and fathom out how I can gain access to yet another potential screw.

Unfortunately will have to wait until next weekend now.

Thanks for the help.

Dennis

I have just noticed Paul that you have the exact same model and colour as mine. Having watched the vid you will find the side panels adjacent to the radio in his video just clip on and off whereas in mine they are held in place by a screw for each panel.

Have just had a quick look at the car in the garage, removed the glove box, very quick to do, then you have to remove the plastic trim around the glove box to gain access to the radio unit to remove the offending screw

Hi Dennis, yes we have the same car, I think they’re great, the Kuro, the Sport Black, and the 25th AE, are my favourites. By the way if you are changing your radio, what are you changing too - I’ve been thinking about doing mine but can’t make up my mind.

cheers

Hi Paul,

Agree about your choice of 5,s.

The radio/cd unit is not the best one around. I drive a Tiguan as my everyday car and that is well equipped music and communication wise. The 5 is a fine weather car for me, but I would like to play music from a memory stick as you can have many hundreds of songs on there. Therefore I am adding the unit from xcarlink which will sit in the glove box. Then I intend to add the DABMOTION  unit so that I do not have to listen to the ■■■■ AM stations and also have a bigger selection of DAB stations.

So not really thinking of changing the unit you see.

Regards

Dennis

Is your unit appearance like this? These are 2 Youtube vids that I referred to get the radio out of my Mk 3.5 2010 model.

I had the same issue but im pretty sure i found the screw on the drivers side (uk car MK3.5… this screw did not exist on my previous MK3)

I managed to reach up from the footwell and remove it without removing any additional fascia than the side panels you have to remove (was a tight squeeze though)

The security bolt.

Yep that was on the drivers side. You need a 10mm socket, extension piece, universal swivel and the ability to be a bit of a contortionist. I ended up almost on my back on the floor of the car and used a torch and extending mirror to locate the little blighter.

Guys, thanks for your input, sorry for late reply but have not been around till now to reply.

You have confirmed to me what I thought. Access to the offending blighter is from the drivers side. Will tackle it this weekend and hope to resolve it.

Again many thanks.

Dennis

Guys, thank you so much, with your help I found the little blighter ( the extra bolt ) on the drivers side and as Sploosh said I did need a 10mm socket with extension and universal joint plus torch. Upon removal I then removed all connections from the rear (3 ), plugged the included harness with the xcarlink into the cars existing harness then plugged the xcarlink into the radio including the earth wire. Switched it all on to see if it worked before putting it all back together and bingo. It performs exactly as the instructions says it would.

Happy bunny now as I can play tons of my favourites from the memory stick. The small unit that plays the memory stick is sat out of sight in the glove box.

Thanks guys.
