Further to my previous post on misted double glazed units I have now replaced two large panes. As they are in hardwood frames I bedded them in with glazing silicone. Everything fine so far! I have tried to remove smears fingermarks etc. of silicone from the glass with a razor blade, this works up to a point but still leaves an unsightly smear. I have tried meths and cellulose thinners to try to clean the glass with very little success. Does anyone know of any “trade tricks” to remove these smears? The glass looks fine until the sun shines on it,then it looks very messy. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Silicone Solvent from a Builders Merchants.
Just a quck reply as Geoff Walton put in his post to let people know if the solvents worked. Answer they are very difficult to obtain, large builders merchants stock them, my local one diid not. They seem to be very agressive and I would not like to try them to remove the silicone round a bath or shower for example in case they ruined the finish as many baths showers etc are made of some sort of plastic material. I was told by a glazier to leave the silicone to cure fully, for several weeks, hence the delay in replying then remove as much as possible with a razor blade then wipe the smears with a cloth soaked in petrol or cellulose thinner and wipe immediately with a clean cloth before the solvent evaporates. One needs the assistance of a ‘smear spotter’ for this,i.e.the good lady wife, when she finally says ‘It seems clean now’ down with the cloth and off to the pub. This is an essential part of the operation. Finally tesco sell a very good cloth for windows which is mildly abrasive and does a very good job in making the glass really clean.
