Removing The Instrument Cluster (Simple Guide Please)

I have recently bought a MK2 and a little more chrome is in order.  Can someone please point me in the right direction as to how we get at the dials to fit the detailed Instrument Rings along with needle covers.  Please accept my apologies if this has been asked before.  I have looked but knowing me in the wrong place.

Thanks

Richard.

Pop the top of the stalk cowl off, pop the instrumemt cowl off amd you will see 4 x phillip head screws, unscrew them and the cluster will be loose ,unplug the connections from the back, you will then see that it will just pop all apart, do not use super glue, go to your local autofactors and get a blister pack of clear automotive sealant, don’t go mad with it just a couple of dabs will do the job. and then just refit when it has gone off.

 Just to clarify

Once the stalk cowl (top half) is off the instrument cowl comes ourt with a straight pull towards youself

The reason for not using super glue is the fumes etch the clear plastic

Thanks for the replies and advice re superglue.  I have only had my MX5 for a month and I know it has been ‘modified’ cosmetically.  I have attached a couple of pics of the dash.  I know the car is a MK2 but the chrome rings on the speedo and rev counter suggest (to me with ltd knowledge)  a mk 2.5 dash.  Having looked at MX5 parts its either a complete set of chrome instrument rings for eg:

http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/chrome-instrument-rings-vintage-style-p-69.html for a mk2 to ensure a match.

or the set of three for the mk2.5:

Any advice you can give from the pics would be welcome

Cheers

Ric

They should  all fit ,and yes it is a Mk 2.5 cluster, just get the 3 rings needed as you have rings on the speedo and rev clock anyway, but if you want them to all look thesame? then the Mk 2 ones should be the same

Was surprised at how easy it was had a trial run before the chrome arrives.  Thanks for your advice.

I need to remove mine on my Mk 1 to do one of the instrument bulbs. Is it fairly similar on the Mk1 to the Mk 2.

Get hold of the cluster on both side and pull towards you with a jurk to release it from the speedo cable socket

Then unplug the 2 electric plugs from the back( note this is the early type, the later type will have another connection to unplug for the Heated rear window warning on light, on your left on the rear)

Mmmmm, lovin the look of that black 5 in front of you M-m, you gotta full pic?

The only thing to have changed from these pics are the rear light clusters now, they have been swapped for some morette rear light units, if you want pic’s of the back end, let me now, but at this time of year she will be a little dirtyWink, as she is used everyday.Thumbs up

Very good guide.

I plan to fit white dials soon and shall use this excellent guide.

i noticed on a couple of your pictures that you have the same immobiliser fitted as i do located near the ignition barrel. Just a shot in the dark ,do you have any info on this immobiliser ? i have a second immobiliser key that you touch the mounted led unit with but it needs to be coded and i dont have any instructions on how to do so.

Thanks,

Mel

Great guide only other question is once you move the cluster any info on replacing the dials removing the needles ect i read that one person saying to make sure you have a full tank of fuel to replace the fuel dial any advice appreciated thanks

I’ll tell you Darren, and then you can add to it buddy.
