Repainting wiper blade arms

Hi all!

I want to repaint some wiper arms, as the black paint has largely come off. My plan is to abrade the surface with wet-and-dry paper, then repaint. I have rust-o-leum satin black paint, do you think I can get away without primer? If not, the only primer I’ve got is Rust-O-Leum’s plastic primer (used to repaint the ashtray!) - would this primer work on metal?

Thanks for any help provided!

Simon

plasticote satin black top coat with the black under coat is the stuff to use.

I used that plasticote, its good stuff, rubbed them down well, sprayed whilst hanging on the linen line, no special under coat at all though, did a year or so ago and still look good… No doubt the more layers the better…

Well in the end I went with a plasticote anti-rust metal primer as my dad had some in the workshop. First I took the wipers apart and sanded the parts down with 240-grit wet and dry paper, then cleaned with white spirit. 2 coats of primer went on, then 3 coats of Satin Black top coat (Rustoleum multisurface rattle can)

The end result is drying off now, but certainly at this point the finish looks superb - signifincantly better than stock wipers, the finish is much nicer. Ironic really as I’m only doing this so I can put these up on eBay - I got decent replacements from a breakers yard, just wanted to tart these up to make them saleable, but now I’m wondering if I’d rather keep them and sell the other ones! Tough call…

I give up

Erm, what? Did I do something wrong?

Realise this is an old thread but couldn’t find a newer one. This sounds great, I’ve got some kurust and black satin paint, but how on earth do I get the wiper blade arms off? Haynes repair manual offers no help.

Thanks! Managed to get it off with a good bit of WD40

Just wanted to thanks for the plastikote tip -  one can of black primer and one can of satin black and the wiper arms on the Eunos look as good as new.  Even managed to pickup a small spoiler thingy , so the whole assembly is back as the factory designed it

Cheers

Just recently did mine. Sanded down with 400 & 800 grit, then cleaned with degreaser. Then just used Hammerite smooth black I think it’s called. I  very lightly sanded with a 1200 grit after coats 1 and 2, then just applied another 2 coats. Perfect finish and also not a high gloss finish, more like a semi-gloss . Added new blades too as the others were slightly rusty and took away of the “new” look arms
