A friend of mine has a one owner, FSH, 23,000 mile 2002 NB Phoenix Limited Edition.
The MOT is due 24/06/24 & he’s had it to his local garage for a pre MOT & they’ve advised him that both front chassis rails & both inner rear wheel arches require welding. He’s in a dilemma as to what to do. Let it go as it is or have it repaired. Any thoughts on repair costs & value as is & repaired?
Do they (the garage) not do welding themselves?
You’d think they’d have given a quote or at worst an estimate, unless they were reluctant to poke big holes in it to work out the cost.
This is indeed a dilemma and one that many of us face at one time or another.
The first question to answer is whether the only consideration is financial.
If the answer to that one is yes then it’s time to let the car go
Expect maybe £300-£500 depending on who your friend can get interested.
If the answer is no, the car is special to your friend then he’ll need deep pockets.
Prices and quality can vary wildly but from experience budget for roughly £1200-£1500 for each rear sill/arch and at least £1000 for the front chassis rails.
It could be more if things are particularly poor, hopefully it’s less if things aren’t too bad.
The low mileage will help with resale value if your friend gets the work done and it’s not a base model which could also help.
There’s a chance he might cover the repair costs at the time of sale or if he’s lucky he might even get more than that.
Hope this helps.
I kept my car and spent the money getting her welded. I could have bought a much newer car with the money I spent but she’s special to me.
Your friend knows his car inside and out and knows it’s history so he may feel the same.
Alternatively he might choose to buy a newer NC instead.
