Replace remote key battery - RF

  1. My model of MX-5 is RF
  2. I’m based near: _Manchester
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: replacing key fob battery. Can I do myself or does it have to be taken to dealership?

Hi N,
It is very easy. It is all in your hand book. Have a look here. https://instructions.cdn.mazda.media/media/mazda/fb00c_MX-5_Owner's_Manual_8EV5-EE-15E%2BL_OM.pdf
Page 6-33 or 427 in the top left.

As above, check manual or go on YouTube for visual explanation. I believe the batteries are from any supermarket, Wilkos or the like. A straight forward 5min job including t break!!

Thanks, don’t know how I’ve missed that in my manual.

Excellent thanks for your help.

Just to confirm. The battery type you need is CR 2025.

Buy two becuse your spare key will be running out of power too

Excellent, thanks for your help.

Best idea for your spare if it is not in use, is to just tape the battery to the outside. That way it does not go flat anywhere near as quickly :+1:

Just had batteries replaced in both keys for son’s Mazda 2. Local Mazda Dealer charged £5 each and did it while I waited. Guess the RF would be no dearer.

My dealer wanted £7.00 + VAT to one of mine, no way would I pay that for 2minutes work

Bought two batteries today from local D.I.Y. Shop £2 each and followed fitting instructions from the handbook link kindly given on here. All good.

By the way the information on the handbook link is nothing like what I have in the RF Handbook that came with the car. Am I missing something or is this jus some special manual only available on line?

Another question how do you start the car if the battery fails on the key?

The online one I indicated has everything in it including how to start the car with a failed key fob.
There is a manual for the navigation on line as well.
The manuals are in the car entertainment system but I can not remember where.
If you want to be educate it is worth going through all the screens to see what they do. Note that some screens and options do not show unless the engine is on.

My experience with the manual is the same. It’s like a very thick but not very detailed “quick start” style guide comes with the car, with a much more detailed online version. The key battery replacement section simply states “take to authorised dealer”.

Annoyingly the UK MyMazda app/website only links to the ST version of the manual which has absolutely no mention of the emergency roof raising/lowering procedure of the RF. Very helpful, so I’ve bookmarked the links to the online manual and the pdf version of it.
