Alternator packed up before Christmas and only recently got round to replacing it, but made the mistake of not disconnecting the battery before christmas.
After alternator fitted battery not great at all .looks like the the original panasonic battery. could any one recommend a replacement (bearing in mind I have just forked out for a
new alternator budget is now a bit tight.

Not sure if it will fit in the battery tray or go under the clamp i would be grateful of any advice

Bite the bullet, replace it with a Panasonic.
Yes, you can use an 063 battery , but unless you intend holding it all in
with cables ties etc, you’ll need a ‘big battery’ fitting kit (tray, clamp etc) from somewhere like MX5parts.
By the time you’ve bought that, plus the Halfords battery, you’re not too far short of the £100 for genuine
Panasonic , again at MX5 parts.
Yes a new Panasonic battery is the way to go. A lead-acid battery will give you big problems latter on.
However, have you tried charging it with a cheap trickle charger from the likes of Lidl. If the Panasonic is totally flat it could take a week or more to bring it back to life but they usually respond well as long as you are patient.
