Replacement Hood. Best/Worst Suppliers/Manufacturers

I need a new hood. I want a black mohair, with a glass heated rear window. I intend to fit it myself.

The car is a 1994 Eunos, and I am based in Buckinghamshire.

Could I have advice as to who to buy from/who to avoid please?

Regards

Hi Chairboy. Take a look here http://www.cartrimmingcompany.co.uk/

A number of North Thames members have had hoods from them and are very pleased with them.

They manufacture the hoods themselves and told me they supply most of the other MX-5 hood suppliers.

Jack Smiths, Swansea. Paid £260 for mine last year, mohair with glass screen. Good quality & bit of a bargain. Good reputation for MX5 hoods.

Jack Smith Swansea definately. Dont be put off by the small workshop.

I happened to be working actually outside his workshop and watched him at work. He gave me advice on how to rectify and realigne my hood that had been fitted through Mazmania. I had paid £349 + £100 fitting plus other costs. Sorted it out myself then - but still waiting for for the original supplier to rectify - 4 weeks now!

By the way if you are after leather seats or even repairs to seats the guy he shares the work shop with is excellent. Wish I had come across them earlier.

Raymond, at Jack Smith’s, offered to rectify it FREE of charge, but you did not return with your MX-5.

MazMania’s independent fitter offered to refund his £100 fitting fee IF you preferred to drive up to Knutsford for MazMania to adjust it. Following Raymond’s advice you were able to adjust it yourself. The fitter in question has fitted a number of hoods for MazMania over the past 8 years - without complaint!

A vast majority of MazManias customers fit their own hoods using the comprehensive fitting kit after watching the CD instruction Video which, like the hoods, has been refined over the past 8 years.

Jack Smith’s offer excellent value for money hoods, by re-cycling components. They also fit MazMania hoods for those preferring to have an all-new hood with brand new lightweight glass, drain channels above the doors etc.

Mr Jones,

I came back to you after you fitted my hood, i told you there was a leak into the boot, you didnt even offer to take a look. You were not interested. Huh? At the time I was stupid enough to believe you had done everything right and that the leak was cause by something else.

I found out later through the help of mazdamender that you had ripped out my rain rail leaving the corners in studded in near the seatbelt tops. Shock You had taped it up inappropriately and you had also not put tensioner cables in. I helped him refit my hood properly and it looked much better than your fit. The used rain rail wayne put in has never let a leak in since. You charged me the sum of over £500 and I still have the receipt. I found out later you had very much overcharged me for a simple hood.

This hood is now three years old. The material you said was the best is not the best. Its not mohair, its canvas and thinner than other mohair hoods. Its wearing away at the edges and rubbing on the sides. Thankfully with the help of wayne its lasted. I have never recommended you after the mess you made of mine.

I have waterproofed, cleaned and looked after it. Its shoddy workmanship from you. You spoke to my friend benboy at the woodvale show commenting my car is an mot failure.

Errr yes of course its an mot failure years ago because it had a cat c accident. But look at the beauty now shes all right and running brilliantly and I dont regret a single penny I spent on her - apart from the £500 quid I gave you. You knew you had done a bad job on mine. You are not an expert fitter the way you sell yourself at shows.

I checked benboys hood and its absolutely fantastic fit. If you were so confident in your work, you would not make errors on owner’s hoods and you would offer to correct them properly.

I am sure there a are few owners on here who have come across you trying to sell yourself, but please folks on here do not go to mazmania for a hood. You will be disappointed.

If you look on the link above you will see my car with the hood, click on the picture to see the bigger size. Colour looks great on the hood then doesnt it, but look at the sides above the window, no cables fitted. At that time I had the mini steering wheel on the car. And the cowl was the original plastic. Colour on the hood now is pinkish and fading all the time.

I got benboy to feel the material on my hood, his is definitely mohair, mine is hard and not soft at all, its canvas.

Dont know why he still has my car advertised on there cause it now looks like this.

Mazda OEM Mohair aren’t that great! They stretch so badly Mazda changed baggy hoods under warranty

On Thursday I had a ‘Red Wine’ hood fitted to my Silver Mk2 by The Soft Top Shop. The hood looks superb and Paul who owns the business was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Can’t recommend highly enough!
