Replacement Hood for Mark 1 MX5 Advice Needed - Go with Hothoods or DandyCars - Mohair with Glass

Hi, Please could someone recommend whether I should go for which company, both local to me - I am being charged £400 with Hothoods and £475 with Dandycars, for Mohair with Glass window incl. fitting. Hothoods talks about “Prestige Hoods” as a manufacturer for their hoods, not sure the significance of this and where Dandy Cars source theirs from.

Thanks

Hi

I have a dandy cars tan mohair with glass rear window on mine,i fitted this last year and i am more than happy with it,but it is all down to choice,i fitted a black pvc one with zip out rear window from hoods direct last week for someone and it looked really good all the holes lined up and really easy to fit,i think he said he paid about £130.00 for it,so i think it is all down to how you are going to use the car and your budget and the colour of the hood you need???because you will also have to get it fitted, around £80’ish,depending on who you use???

all the best and good luck

hope this helps you

I’ve just had my seat recovered with leather (£300 bargain) and the same copany does roofs - mohair supplied and fitted for around £250 ,cars are there from all over the country and they are really good if my seats are anything to go by - the compay is Jack Smiths in Swansea and they have been highly recomended on this forum before they’re number is 01792 461922

For what it’s worth:

I bought a tan top w/ plastic window and installed it on my '94 last year. After only one year it looks much, much worse than the OEM did after 15 years. Blotchy with light spots and sticky to the touch.

The reps at Prestige blame on the fact that I use Turtle Wax car wash soap… which I also used for years on the OEM. I can’t recommend against Prestige enough.

My PVC tan roof on my Mk 1 as been on there for some 11 years now ,and as been washed with everything including turtle wax’s products, and I have never had any problems,(mine came from somewhere else)ether the roof is rubbish and badly made or some one as but something more on the roof without you knowing?

I’m having a mohair roof with a glass screen fitted at Jack Smith’s in Swansea after reading all the recommendations for him on this forum. He sounds like a top bloke from speaking to him on the phone and its an amazing £280! He doesn’t have a fancy website or anything but from what I gather he doesn’t need one as he gets so much trade through mx-5 owners! It’s a bit of a trek from Southampton to Swansea, but who cares!

I’ve had a hothoods Mohair/glass fitted about a year ago now, no issues with the quality of the roof or the fitting.

YMMV.

Nick.
