Replacement hood - West/North Midlands

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK2.5 2002 1.8
  2. I’m based near: Ironbridge __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Replacement hoods__

Hi all. New member and new owner! Just bought a 2002 Mk 2.5 with a tatty/split hood (which was more than fairly reflected in the price). Am looking to replace it with a new one and would appreciate any recommendations in the West/North Midlands area.

Many thanks!

Antony

I’m based in Worcestershire and I used The Soft Top Shop - http://www.thesofttopshop.com/

Paul will come to you.

Many thanks, that’s great. Appreciate the advice!

Another SoftTopShop recommendation here. Paul really is a great fitter.
Not the cheapest but quality hood & fitting.

Many thanks Peter - appreciate it. Cost and quality/value are two completely different arguments but most people focus on the former!!

Sound advice!! Thanks so much for the advice and the greeting! I’ll check him out too and see what the current prices are.

And thanks all for the welcomes and prompt responses - greatly appreciated.

Hope to catch some of you local folk soon. A bit of a new venture for us and whilst we’d been toying with the idea for a while, it was a chance advert in a local newsagent (didn’t know people still did that!) that roped us in. No doubt plenty of niggles to discover and sort, but we’ve got a whole heap of receipts and service history from the local garage too, and a genuine seller who’d had the car for 6 years, after his neighbour had kept it for another 6, so we know where it’s been in any case! Still, running and driving well for now and having immense fun!!

Local Help Also If You Get Hooked

I could do with some advice on this please if possible, I have recently bought a 10th Anniversary MX-5 and registered an account with this owners club website, but couldn’t see how to private message you Bullit2005. I want to replace the soft top for a nice one as it’s dirty and also doesn’t close, currently got a hard top on.

I have had a scan online for 2nd hand ones but non good enough quality or condition for my liking.

So, for new ones, fitted, best local (ish) deal I found was for £850 fitted, for the one I want, which is MOHAIR, BLUE with Heated Glass.

Here is the link. Mazda MX-5 1989-2005

Would really appreciate some thoughts on this, good deal? Good site?
Any other recommendations?
Thanks in Advance.
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

To PM someone click on the name ‘Bullit2005’ for example a box should appear with in which a link via the blue box marked ‘Message’ will appear top left.

I know from personal experience fitting an NBFL roof would take me one liesurely day to remove the old one and a second liesurerly day to fit the new one. Call it 8 hours if I could stay at it that long without interuption.

I looked at Soft Top Shop and BAS International options and thought really not much in it except Soft Top are quoting fitted while BAS are not. Also noted that the BAS Mohair appears to have something closer to the original rear window fittment I had on my original vinyl which edged confidence in their favour, though to be fair the Soft Top Shop looks a little neater being sown in.

Luckily my '02 NBFL is in for a respray and trim swap from standard black S-VT to Montana Cream anyway so I just need the roof sent to MX5 Restorations in Ilkeston, otherwise I’d probably go the Soft Top Shop route. Price and more importantly quality look right,

Hi Jamie & Welcome :handshake:

Just acknowledging your post…bear with me whilst I do some thinking on this

Hi again

Clarifications: ‘10th Anniversary MX-5’ ? ‘Registered an account with this owners club website’ ?

Bit Vague on both counts

What I can say is I would totally recommend going for Mohair with Heated Glass and I would avoid 2nd hand ones and my replacement is BAS Certified and was new in 2019 via Insurance Claim

Replacing a Soft Top is hopefully ‘once in a life time’ [had Bullit since 2007]

I looked at the link you sent but can’t comment as ‘TIMES HAVE CHANGED’ re Price I suspect !!

Also don’t know the Company in the link …but why would I as bought the Mohair via MX-5 Parts and then paid a Mobile Specialist to fit it in 2019

So Sorry Jamie…my knowledge is out of date to assist you

All I can do is search my Archives and advise you what the Replacement cost me in 2019 via Insurance Claim and Club Membership Discounts at the time

Let me know if I can help further

Site can be overwhelming when you first get on it and I was a visitor before becoming a member 2018/2019 so I wouldn’t have been able to send PM’s either !
