- Replacement steering wheel
Hi. One of things I dislike about my car is the steering wheel. I find it too thin and hard (Careful)
I am looking to change the wheel for something thicker possibly with a flat bottom. (Careful again Mrs)
From on here I have seen that Royal steering wheels get a good write up so thinking of using them, but before I order I would appreciate a “Steer” (sorry) on what I should be speccing. In essence as above I think the wheel needs to be thicker, possibly with thumb ridge things and a flat bottom. Appreciate advice from anyone who has made a similar change.
Royal would be the go-to I think, either for a mail order or in-person service.
Take a look at the gallery and scroll down to Mk4 for inspiration. A few 124s have crept in there too, but you’ll get the general idea!

Your spec can be as individual as you like really, in terms of colour, perforated sections, alcantara sections, 12 o’clock marker etc. Plus thickness adjustment and a flat bottom as you mention.
Cheers,
Steve
Hiya. Thanks for that. Yes I have checked out their website. Having never specced such an item before I was after members thought on the do’s and don’ts with such a purchase. E.g. Lessons learnt and the like.
The company can be recommended and the quality of the work is good, both of the materials used and also the swap-over procedure if you’re visiting in person.
The rest of the decisions in terms of materials, design and colour are very much upto the individual in terms of look and feel. Hence why the image gallery is useful for inspiration.
Lessons learnt - it’s a worthwhile upgrade and can be recommended ![]()
I’m not aware of any negatives.
Highly recommend Royal, I went for full alcantara which increased the thickness, 12 o clock marker and flat bottom.
Hi. Can you remember what increase in thickness you went for over OEM? Thanks
I didn’t want to increase the thickness but there is no alternative with the material, I think it was 3mm but could be wrong
Can highly recommend Royal, they did mine last year.
Found original really thin compared to my daily drive. Wanted to keep wheel looking as standard as possible so went for plain black leather with orange stitch just increased rim by 2mm (remember this adds 4mm total to overall thickness) totally transformed the feeling and pleased every time I drive it.

Another recommendation for Royal. Transformed my enjoyment of the car - never did like that slippery , thin rimmed horror . Can’t say how thick this is but it’s chunky all right.
These pictures are of my Royal steering wheel next to the original.
The difference in thickness is noticeable straight away, the pictures don’t really do the difference justice.
Quality is outstanding.
How long did it take you to fit the wheel was it an easy fit
I got it done at Royal, he takes no time at all!
Thanks Ian l think l will do some checking on how to do this, been looking for a new wheel but want to fit it my self, l am going to stick with the cover for now
It can be a bit tricky Tony, but a man with your skillset shouldn’t have any real problem. You just have to be careful not to upset the clock spring, I couldn’t remove mine without a wheel puller but most don’t seem to have that problem. The two times I’ve removed mine it simply would not come off without the puller.
thank you for the info Just been looking at some Utube vids thinking yep I could do it …
maybe

Thanks for all the info. I am now booked into Royal wheels in April. Gone for 2mm over stock thickness, perforated sides , smooth leather top and bottom , thumb things and a flat bottom.
Looked and had ago at my steering wheel for removal and the B*****y will NOT move think the old Japanese mechanic must have welded it on …arrrh …!
Sorry to hear that. It does however make me glad that I have booked in for them to do it even though its quite some way from us.
