I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Springs
I have a mark 2.5 Phoenix model which I have restored to a high standard. About 4 years ago I lowered the car on a set of cheap £100 lowering springs from Ebay, I loved the look but to be honest at times the ride is a bit harsh… I’m looking to change out the springs and to get something better. My question is should I put it back to stock with new shocks and springs or is there a decent set of springs I can fit with the now 18 year old shocks, or would ajustable suspension be the way to go, bearing in mind that I don’t want to pay the earth and will need to get my local garage to fit them for me so have to factor that into the price of the parts… Don’t know what would be best so thought here would be the place to ask…
Under brands such as MaxspeedingRods. They look great, with a nice anodized finish, and adjustable bits. But it doesn’t take long to find some very detailed reviews showing them to be utter junk.
These shocks are two piece shocks, or double spring perch coilovers. Essentially there is a generic threaded insert, with a internally threaded tube specific to the car its being fitted to. The Japanese came up with this idea; small tuning shops, such as Corns, could come up with the own branded coilovers for not a lot of money. Its how BC, Meister etc do it…
A good video on why this might not be always a good idea;
So steer away from the £200 double perch shocks, and look for fairly conservative 1 piece designs. The Vmaxx sold by MX5parts seems to be a good buy for less than £400.
At that price, I certainly wouldn’t contemplate second hand shocks, especially as you have to pay someone to fit them.
That is brilliant, thank you very much for your help, I will watch the video and hopefully learn from it. On a side note while the suspension is out is there anything else I should uprate or replace ?
