Replacing the locks on 2002 MX5 Trilogy

Hi all.

Hopefully this is a quick and easy question, I’ve just introduced myself in the ‘new members’ section but “Hi!” again

Basically, the barrel in the driver’s lock has collapse so I was looking to swap for a replacement. I’ve had the door cards off and taken it all out and had a look and replacing that bit is easy enough.

I’ve already previously disconnected the wire/sensor from the end of the barrels on both doors to disable the central locking and alarm as one side had gone faulty anyway.

So my question is this: Given I’m only using them as physical locks now, can I just buy replacement locks and swap them over? I was wondering why most of the 2nd hand ones on eBay are sold (at great cost) with the ECU too?

Will I have problems if I try and connect up the wires/sensors at a later date to bring the central locking/alarm back online?

I’m watching this set on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111626536281 which states for a Mk2 - are the locks on the back of those handles the same as on a Mk2.5?

Cheers,

Matt

The original reason for the complete ECU kit was that the ecu was matched to an immobiliser that was in turn electronically matched to the ignition key.

Phyisically the two keys fitted all the locks and the electonic numbers on the transponders in the keys linked back to the ecu.

That was a big problem if the ecu was faulty as you had to change everything but that is not the case now.

You change the ecu and the immobiliser. Take the keys that fitted the donor car to Timpsons and get new keys matching the existing car cut shape with the electonic number from the donor car.

There is another way to do it but not on an open forum.

Therefore you could just buy a lock set and use the old keys to do the ignition and the new lock set keys to do the doors.

I can see no reason that you canno hock up the central locking again.

Just for my own iformation how does the central locking work on the MK2.5?

Can you lock and unlock both doors from the drivers door lock as in the Mk2 1.8is

Can you lock and unlock both doors from the passenger side door lock that you cannot do on the Mk2.

Or do you have to use a fob to stop the alarm going off.

Hi Eddie.

Thanks for the reply. On our car, it’s all done by the key (no fob) - You can (or at least could!) unlock the central locking using the key in either door I think. It’s been disconnected for a while now. It certainly disarmed the alarm from both as you’d expect.

I’m happy enough to end up using a different key for the boot and ignition (so that the immobiliser still disarms) as at the moment, we have to climb across from the passenger side to unlock the driver’s door!

So it sounds like I should be ok getting another set of just door locks. My problem is that I’m not sure if they changed between Mk2 and Mk2.5.
I had a look on mx5parts.co.uk and their replacement locks say not suitable for Mk2.5 ( http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/door-lock-mk2-p-1439.html )

I’ll keep scouring eBay for a set from a 2.5.

Many thanks.
Matt

Autolink do not agree with MX5parts they say there secondhand units do fit Mk2 and Mk2.5.

Also check with Mazda sometimes new prices are not over the top, some times they are.

Hi there,

So sorry for leaving the thread abandoned for ages(!) - I lost my hard drive and only just got up and running again.

As it happens, a 2.5 set came up on eBay at a reasonable price and I’ve fitted them AOK.

One thing that occurred to me, I didn’t reconnect the wires that (I assume) go to the central locking/alarm module as I figured that, now I’m using the wrong key for this car, I’d end up setting the alarm off when I unlocked the car.

Am I correct in that assumption? I presume that the sensor on the back of the lock barrel reads the transponder code from the key and transmits it to the alarm?

Cheers,
Matt

The “sensor” on the lock barrel is a switch that sends a signal to the alarm when the key is turned.
