Restoring / Recolouring / Replacing Steering Wheel

Hi all,

Amongst the many todo items, my interior is one such thing I am looking to tidy up and notably my steering wheel is looking pretty badly faded.

It’s not leather, it’s the rubberised kind and the airbag is a darker colour as they have reacted different with age. My question is, how do I restore the colour to black? I searched and can only find solutions for leather steering wheels. I am hoping there may be some kind of product out there that does this for those kinds of steering wheels?

Failing that, is it realistic to replace the steering wheel and airbag with another wheel with an airbag? The car needs one for the MOT and I’m thinking I could perhaps use one from another Mazda such as Mazda 2 or an NC model? One without steering wheel controls.

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK2.5
  2. I’m based near: Durham
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Steering wheel restoration / replacement

Finding a used wheel is probably the cheapest option, however you’d be having to trust that the airbag was sound. Probably not something you want to find out at the wrong moment.

Have you had a look at these guys? They do really stunning work. Going for a re-trim could be a great option for you :+1:

I’m not 100% sure on my airbag in honesty. It’s a replacement and older than the car itself. I can get a good quality mk2.5 wheel for 35 quid and installation seems easy but was hoping for something like a product I can wipe on.

Seems a tad extreme, and not for an airbag…
