- My model of MX-5 is: 2002 Phoenix 1.8
- I’m based near: Nottingham
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Advice on restoring a worn out part of the drivers leather seat. I have never attempted any work on leather before so not quite sure where to begin on this. Most guides I’ve seen on here are for cracked leather, where as my seat seems to be worn/rubbed through. Is there a standard colour code I could find for Phoenix edition seats? What sort of equipment do I need? Would really appreciate some help, thanks!
I had a set of seats the same colour, seem to remember they were called Sienna brown.
Anyways you can get a colouring dye to basically dab on the affected parts, it sort of works but wears off quickly and if not careful will rub off on clothing. Not really a fix but I’ve seen some online fixes for leather, the professionals use a spray paint for leather and blend it in. I’ve actually had a cream leather settee sprayed to hide scuffs but it wasn’t on a highly used area.
I think you need to try to find a car auto trimmers for advice.
To stop the paint rubbing off (its not a dye, you can’t redye leather), use the sealer thats supplied in the kit. Furniture Clinic now do an all in one leather repair
I don’t know how resilant it is. Note, they used to do custom mixing, using a swatch off the bottom of the seat (5x5mm is enough), but I suppose because of the “Situation”, they can’t do that at the moment. Its possible if you call them, they might have a mix done for a Mazda. I know they perfectly colour matched for my S-Limited, and gave me a code for re-ordering, but the code isn’t appearing o the site as a “standard” colour.
You have to “really” clean the seats. And thats not a wipe over, but using their cleaner, which I think is an acetone mix, then scuff up the area to take off the glaze. I’ve used wet in dry to prep the surface. An air brush is best, but I’ve done entire seats using a sponge and patience.
Also, use a hair dryer on the bolster to tighten up the leather.
Prep is key. I took red seats to black several years ago, and it hasn’t worn off.
Thanks a lot @ast. Definitely doesn’t sound easy I might give it a go in the future. I’ve dropped a line to furniture clinic see if they have they colour code. Cheers
I’ve used Furniture clinic products a few times, always with satisfactory results. Follow the instructions precisely and if you decided to use an airbrush then use theirs.
Also have a look at liquidleather.co.uk I’ve had good results with them in the past (also known as gliptone). I recommend their leather conditioner, really smells like leather.
I used theirs. It was terrible, kept blocking. Brought a better one from Halfords.
I’m surprised. My (quite expensive) Badger Airbrush was useless and the one supplied (a cheapo £10 job) worked faultlessly.
