Fitted it into the HIFI stand, unfortunately this one is a mid size shelf so it definitely fills it!
Simplicity itself to set up the remote has everything to hand and the amp sub menu allows loads of adjustment! The speaker impedance is adjustable between 6 ohm and 8 ohm, my LEAK 600’s are 4-8ohm so set the amp to 6 ohm, hope that’s correct? Bluetooth pairing again was very easy and once paired, the amp can be switched on via the phone when set to BT standby setting. Pity the front isn’t silver, the black fascia is solid aluminium plus an anodised finish. Would have been cheaper and more retro style to leave it silver
Anyway, all good and I got it through the door, into the lounge, connected and playing without a word from Mrs B (who just happens to be working from home today) in the next room! How lucky is that?
TBH Chris, only the new amp/tuner! There’s such a turnaround of stuff, in the HIFI stand, I think she’s lost track? I still have the 2060 speakers lurking behind the lounge door which I think she’s forgotten about!
We’re having a vinyl night in early February, our two cruise couples friends (two couples) are coming round to ours for the evening, bringing their loft stored albums with them, none have anything to play them on these days but I have!
So, I’m putting the following into the lounge for the night!
SET 1 - LEAK 3001 TT (not LEAK DELTA 75 TT) + LEAK 600 speakers + SONY STR 190 amp
SET 2- AIWA PX860 TT + AIWA 22 series mini stack + LEAK 2060 speakers
SET 3 - HITACHI SDT7785 music centre + HITACHI 3 way bookshelf speakers
I also have a CDG Karaoke system and wireless and wired microphones plus stands so should be a right laugh. Our age range is mid 50’s (Mrs B) to mid 60’s (me) The others fall in between.
If not before, Mrs B will definitely know what’s what in terms of squirrelled away “things” on the night!
Hi Paul, didn’t think of that innocent remark being misconstrued, might just leave things as they are and see what happens? I’ll have some black bin liners on standby just in case!
An unusual design from Sony from the early 1970s. The TA 88 (amp) and the ST 88 (tuner) was probably perfect for people with little space, as they would fit on a bookshelf quite easily.
Now, I’ve not actually bought this set-up, I lifted the photo from the internet, but thought it was so unusual, that retro Hi-Fi fans might like a look-see. If anyone was interested in this system, they appear quite regularly on eBay, for often very little money.
I have to admit, I do not like slider controls for volume etc very much - I think more accurate and finer control can be obtained with rotary controls - but that’s just me !
It’s not just you Chris, I don’t like slider controls on hi-fi stuff either! I think they’re from the era when “graphic equalizers” with slider controls were the fad!
Yes I do remember this sony set up and I have in the loft an sq100a quadraphonic amplifier that fits into the set. I went through a quadraphonic stage with dark side etc. Unfortunately the format didn’t take off but sounded pretty good. Can’t put up a photo but I’m sure the sq100a is on Google. Knowing Sony’s reliability I would imagine the sq still works. Well into this hi fi thread barry keep it going.
Yes you’re right about the SQA 100 quad decoder, sold as an extra to go with the ST 88 and TA 88 set-up. Oddly though, visually it didn’t seem to me to be a very good match up with the amp and tuner, because it was nearly all knobs, and not a slider in sight !
I must admit that I do like the look of the tuner with its big dial, it brings back memories of a big old radio (Cossor?) we had in the early '50s when I was quite young.
I’ve recorded the show, and will watch it later - thanks for the nod Trufflehunt.
I was born in 1954 - my brother is twelve years older than I am, and my sister seven years older, and as a kid there was always rock’n’roll playing in our house, on the family’s red and cream Dansette. When they grew up and left home, in the mid-60s, the Dansette was mine, until I started work, and bought my first stereo - a Sony, as I’ve mentioned before. This was my first major purchase, even before a car !
It will be a real trip down memory lane to see what James May does to this piece of iconic 1960s record-playing history.
Just watched this on catch up TV. Love to watch James May The Dansette harks back to a nicer time, even if that is only when looking through rose tinted spectacles! Many thanks for the heads up, appreciated
