Does anyone have any experience with reupholstering a standard cloth ND seat?
The car (2019 ND2 SE+) has an all black interior and I’d like to brighten it up a bit by changing the central panels on the seats for something like a checked or houndstooth fabric.
I recall reading that the ND seats are not made like conventional seats, so I would like to know a bit more before I go any further with this idea.
With thanks in advance.
Hi J,
Have a look here Main Menu - MX5 Manual | Mazda MX5 (Mk4) 2015+ it will tell you how to take the seat out and how to dismantle it.
I did put extra lumber support in our ND1 but would be very apprehensive about taking the cover off and modifying it. That is way beyond my meagre skills.

Sounds to me like a job for a professional seamstress. DIY seat covering? Hmmm. If you’ve never done anything along those lines before I get the feeling it will look like a primary school art project
I’ll just add that removing the seats and dismantling them is pretty straightforward, there aren’t any gotchas. (I lowered the seat rails on my Recaros which is a fairly involved process).
Sorry, I should have made it clear that I have no intention of doing this myself, I would take it to a professional automotive trimmer. I just wanted to be sure there were no hidden secrets inside the seats before it was taken apart.

Aha, A quick scan through that manual and I have found what I was looking for. The seat has a load bearing net, as seen in this diagram, which makes them different to conventional seat designs.
