Reverse light switch interchangability

Hello all.

As per the title, will the Mk1 reverse switch work in a mk2 gearbox?

Not for the first time, my senses left me and whilst diagnosing why my reverse light doesn’t work properly since my Rocketeer conversion - I completely forgot that my gearbox is from a NB/Mk2. I’ve been trying to get my reverse light to work using a mk1 switch.

Now, it seems to screw in to the gearbox fine and I know that the gearboxes themselves are interchangeable, so this might be a red herring.

The switch was purchased new (and is genuine Mazda) a few months ago. When I connect the switch the reverse light stays on regardless of what I do with the plunger on the switch.

I’ve tested the wiring from the car (one shows correct live voltage and the other is not live) and obviously the light unit/bulb is working - so I ordered ANOTHER new switch.

However it hit me this morning through a conversation with @Benji93 (thanks mate!) that my gearbox was from the NB.

Anyway, that was quite a ramble!

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Most list these a being different but I think they should be exactly the same, although the back end electrical connection is different.
Very easy to test with a multimeter and just press in the probe for continuity.
The only other memory I have is that there may be a spacer washer or two required when fitting. If that is right and you have fitted without the spacer washers, may account for the light on, in reverse or not?

Hi rhino, thanks for the reply.

The switch doesn’t seem to be supplied with a washer.

I’ll have to see if I can find the thread size and order one seperately.

Thank you
