Review - Cobalt exhaust from Moss

I bought my mk2 about a month ago, to compliment the wife’s mk1. I had fitted an MX5 parts exhaust to her car and have been very pleased with it, and looking at my feeble exhaust my mk2 deserved something better:

and here is the new back box, £146 after discount on the current Moss special offer:

Fitting.

First problem was to undo the two nuts that clamp the exhaust flange. These will be rusted and horrible, but I managed to loosen them the previous weekend using several doses of penetrating oil and an air impact wrench. Next issue is “slipping the old exhaust out of the hangers” yeah right. Mazda in their wisdom finish the hangers with a “mushroom” so the hangers doesnt come off, and it doesnt! 2 hours cursing swearing levering, washing up  liquid vaseline angle grinder cutting off, and it was off!

Fit the exhaust to the two hangers on the offside first, then without the flange engaged on the studs engage the final hanger and bolt up - took me 3 hours in all.

and now we have this:

A quick drive up the road, revealed not a massive change from standard, my neighbour said it sounded really nice, I would prefer just a bit more noise, but I’ll report back once I’ve got more experience, it certainly wont be too noisey on a run.

Verdict:

Very well made and exceptional value. I think I would prefer more noise, but the arrangment on the mk2 means that the small silencer remains in place, and I think its this rather than the rear box that suppresses the noise. Service from Moss is good, but their website needs updating to include reviews and also to enable order tracking.

And you cant just fit just the one blingy bit can you? so I added this:

Please feel free to post other views on this exhaust…mods how about a reviews section?

This is the exhaust Stainless Steel  Finisher I have omn my Mk1.

Hi Pollyana, What does that exhaust finisher do, it looks like some sort of flame thrower lol

Alan

Hi Dave P that rear box is very similar to the mx5 parts one I have just fitted to my 1.8 sport, yes it does sound nice, but I did not want a boy race dust bin of an exhaust just a nice exhaust note, dont know about you but the car sound faster, if you know what I mean yu seen just to push it that little bit more to hear the exh, its what your right ear is for eh

It doesn’t do anything apart from look a little better than the plain exhaust tube. Do any of them do anything other than this? I think it is a Japanese bling that came with the car when it was imported.

Just been out or a longer drive and its very nice, about the right noise level I think now. Alan, I think this and the MX5 parts silencers are actually the same…

I ordered my Cobalt over the weekend, shipped today. My Mk1 had a MX5Parts exhaust and the sound was perfect, nice sound when the right foot was used but quiet at cruise. I was looking for the same for my MK2 and this seemed to fit the bill according to miata.net. Time will tell but it’s a bargain at £166 shipped including gasket.

Ian

Ian, it is quieter than the MX5/mk1, but still oK you will enjoy it, please feed back your views!

MX5parts get most of their kit from IL Motorsport. Cobalt is Moss USA’s own brand; they’ve applied it to stuff they previously called Jackson Racing. I think most of it is made in the US.

 This is my exhaust…

I think it looks pretty smart… only cost £9

Just measured the exstisting marked and rusting end pipe and got one of these.

Fitted snugly and has a good finish…With a decat my exhaust looks and sounds great…

Had my new box fitted last week, went away for the weekend and quite pleased. It is louder than the stock MK2 but not as loud as the IL Mk1. However, this has it’s plus point as the wife did not notice [6]. I think it will grow on me. The only thing on the negative is that it does not change note very much with the right foot. Bubbles at tickover but never really screams.

Ian
