RF Service cost

Hi, Are Mazda parts really expensive? Ive just been quoted £625 for my sixth service on my 2019 2.0 sport nav + RF at my local supplying dealer. This includes spark plugs. oil& filter.air filter &MOT i think. Full service history until now, but i cant justify that price!

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Same. I’m going elsewhere for my work.

No, a good independent would be half that.

Some dealers seem to be trying this on: Spark plugs on the ND are not time related, but 75K miles replace. SO unless your car is on 75K miles, or expect to do so soon?

Europe MX-5 ND schedule:

Maybe ask you dealer to read the manual, if it isn’t anywhere near 75K

btw, they aren’t all playing it, Newport’s 6th service, for eg. I had mine done last April. No plugs.

The expensive thing at most main dealers (for any brand of car) tends to be their hourly labour rate. This is often significantly higher than the hourly rate charged by independent garages.

Hi, no my car only has 10.500k miles, but 6 years oid, not age dependent change then?

I wouldn’t bother changing them TBH. At 10k miles half of those services weren’t necessary either but for a full SH maybe so, but necessary as oil degrades anyway if not changed.
Independent servicing is the way to go if you can’t do your own👍

Nope. They’re seeing you coming. Tell them to read the manual, or if they are local, pop in and show the specially trained and informed staff.

@McrNick is spot on, main dealers big kick is the hourly rate, my local I think is at >£100 now!

And, as @ND12 said, certain aspects are not age dependent but mileage however dealers just lump everything in together. The 6th service, if also doing the estimated annual of 12.5k, would require spark plugs but as you are not close to that I don’t see the requirement.

I did have previously shared this screenshot of a price breakdown for services on NDs:

Prices may be marginally out of date

I am curious how they have reached £625 when, even with spark plugs and a £100/hour labour rate it should only be ~£410!

It is also worth reading the First Service at Main Dealer and the 30AE 4th service threads for more information.

Mine had it’s 6th service in August and I was charged £383 by the local main dealer.

Mine went for 5th and mot in summer, cost not too bad (changed from usual stealer though). Advisories about rear brakes but they couldn’t do them at the time - even though I had told them they needed doing. Lucky really as my local firm did it for half the quoted price from the dealer.
At 40k mines high mileage compared to pampered weekend warriors so I’m not sure my FSH to date would do much for value compared to an obviously limited use car…

Thanks, all of you for your interest & advice, i think i will get another main dealer quote, then go independant if not substantially reduced! i was expecting £400 max. The problem is that i have paid £370 for a Mazda warranty for the last 3 years which is dependant on main dealer servicing. Retired now so wont be able to afford any large unexpected mechanical repair bills!

I may be wrong here, but i think that warranties are not dependant on main dealer servicing, but ARE dependant on genuine Mazda service parts being used (receipts required obviously). Any competent mechanic can do the work.

Ask them why they wish to fit spark plugs on a 10K miles car, when the interval is 75K, no n time dependent. Be interesting to know their ‘answer’.

I am in agreement with @ND12, ask for a quote breakdown and see what they are charging you for because the price is silly!

£95 for spark plugs!!

These are far cheaper

Hi i contacted Mazda extended warranty yesterday & you are correct in your assumption as long as Mazda parts used by VAT registered fitter.

After my last 30AE 5 year service at Stoneacre Mazda I was offered a 2 year service plan @ £26 / month including MOT which I thought was decent value.

Some Mazda dealers try to keep their customers loyalty then!

I think the price quoted is the going rate at most manufacturers main dealers for such a major service, and the plugs are expensive on the ND, £100 to buy a set. Personally, I changed the plugs at 40000 on my 2015 ND and I did think it ran smoother so I was happy to pay it, but at an indpendent. It cost £300 all in.
