Knew there was something else, re the "horrible plastic pipe " that send noise into the cabin as it goes up the rev range and removing it, seems DON’T !, it has a anti resonator built in where it bolts to the wing, removing the pipe system causes booming and droning from about 4K rpm, good write up on Miata.net re this, seems similar to not changing the other Mk’s induction pipes and their resonator boxes for the same reason, unless you are able to live with the noise .

 

I blocked mine, like this;

 

This is my approach;

Unclip the sound tube at the connection next to the chamber like device closest to the wing. This is one complicated design of tube for something to funnel sound!

Find a rubber grommet/bung of an appropriate size.

Stick it in the pipe and re-clip back to the chamber, job done and quickly reversible.
