So happy I found this thread! I’m looking into buying my first 1.6 eunos which is my second car and was really worried about the insurance. I’m currently with Adrian flux on my main car so gave them a bell first. I’m 26 and fully comp restricted to 3000 miles came out as £450. Not bad I thought until I phoned RH and they quoted me £109! I had to ask her twice to be clear lol I’m sure she said it covered me for track days aswell, not that il be using it for that. Well happy!
Cant recommend RH highly enough, just renewed with them for the sixth year at about £200 for 5000 miles. In six years my premium has only gone up by roughly £15!
Also been with RH for several years & their premiums have always been amazing. They provide a very comprehensive policy & their easy to get hold of on the phone with friendly helpful staff. Never had to claim though, which is really the acid test of any insurance provider. Has anyone any experience of a claim through RH?
Yeah they sent it me the very next day lol I was very surprised also, I pay over 6x more than that for my main car which is a Seat Leon Fr Mk1 with 4 years no claims! I’m not complaining though lol
I phoned them again today because I’ve actually bought a Mk1 mx5 now and I think I’ve found a potential reason as to why its so cheap. He said that if the car I had bought was one year younger, a 1993 instead of a 1992 then I would have paid a lot more. I find this very interesting as I can’t see why this would be the case. Also I’ve declared that its standard with no mods but I am able to modify it if I let them know and possibly pay an additional fee.
Anyway I’ve added another 2000 miles to my limit from 3000 to 5000 and that cost me an extra tenner! So now my fully comp insurance for the year, covering me for track days aswell at a limit of 5000 miles is £118
1 year younger makes the difference between being over 20 years old and not I guess, they must then use that as a big factor in how they determine their premiums… 20 or more years old is a pretty typical cut of for being classic in terms of insurance…
No I live in Wolverhampton in a typical cul de sack. It’s not a rough area by any means but it certainly isn’t upper class either. I have put my Mom and Dad on as named drivers so I don’t know if that makes a difference. I got the idea talking to him tho that it wouldn’t and there only on there just I case I need them to drop it off somewhere or so they can have a spin in it every now and again.
RH Classics have my vote anyway
one note of caution - if you use the car for any commuting at all they’ll not insure you - went for a quote with RH but as there’s the possibility that once in a blue moon it’d be left at the station they just point blank refused to insure me! Would rather be honest and 'fess up that it might be used to commute occasionally than have a claim payout refused at a later date but something to be aware of…
When I took insurance with RH last month I told them that I would want to use the car for the odd commute to and from work, possibly 15 or 20 days a year.
No problem they said, £214 fully comp, 5000 miles a year.
Under cover details it says “Private use plus Class 1 use by the Policyholder”.
how bizarre - was just going through my details, got to asking about usage - was asked where it’d be kept during the day - asked explicitly would I be leaving it at the station ever? I said not usually but it might be possible on the odd occasion (once a month or so, maybe). I was told immediately “This is a classic car policy and we don’t cover any commuting”. End of conversation!
(not like I’m an ‘at-risk’ group either - late 30’s, good postcode and as an indication, previous policies on past MX-5’s have been between £120>£200 for cover, I think as a 24 year old I was paying less than £250…)
not sure it had to be garaged - at night our cars are off the road on a private driveway, out of site from the road. Just when I was asked about where it would be during the day, the fact it might stay at a station on the odd occasion, meant she wouldn’t be able to take the quote any further…
It would only have to be garaged when at your property, usually 10pm to 6am but check your policy so you know.
Seems strange about commuting, I wasn’t covered last year with a different broker (which I was lucky with as I took it to work several times last year without realising I wasn’t covered) which is why I brought it up when getting a quote this year.
Never had any restrictions on a classic motorcycle policy several years ago, is all this hassle a new thing? I can understand restricted mileage and needing to be a second vehicle but not being allowed to use it on a nice day to drive to work is a bit excessive. Unless you work in a really rough area (lucky for me, Norfolk isn’t really “hard core”!!!).
bizarre really - first time I’d ever heard about it. We live in the Sussex countryside so it’s not like it’d be left in a crime hot-spot during the day should it be left at the local village station car park once in a while.
Well, it’ll be temporarily insured on my ‘day’ car policy until I have time next week to sit down and ring around a few other brokers. No drama as standard car policy quotations came in around £260 but would have been nice to have a quote that reflected it’s true usage. Rather be over-insured than under-insured mind…
Same here was going great until i said i or my wife may occasionaly use it for work, perhaps 10 days a year ??? they said fine for me but not for the wife…something to do with me having another car in my name but not her…couldnt quote further wit commuting involved…that’ll be a no then .click.
I’m with RH too. I also mentioned that I might want to use it for work occasionally and when the docs arrived I found I had Class 1 use on my policy too - result! (One thing I didn’t mention though is that if I do use it for work it’ll be in the visitors car park at a prison .)
I’ve been with RH for about 8 years with a pre war car (Austin Seven) and they were very good and cheap.
The policy was much the same as the one I now have for the Mazda.
My RH policy is £116 pa and the car must be kept at my Mothers address in her garage to be covered against theft overnight.
BUT the strange bit is that under the limitations of use it states clearly that its for Social domestic and pleasure purposes and by the policyholder in person in connection with his/her business or profession excluding commercial travelling.
This seems to indicate that I can drive it to work and back i.e commute, but not actually use it for work purposes, which is fine by me and may come in handy one day.
The biggest trouble for me is having to keep it in my Mothers garage, as I need to leave at 4-5 am in the Morning for some speed events and last time I left it on my private driveway and took the chance it wouldn’t get pinched. I’m thinking of asking for a quote to leave it on my drive but I’m afraid they will get cold feet and put my premium up a lot!
I cannot find “class 1” mentioned anywere on the certificate?
