Got easy access to the bottom of the roof drain system as I’ve had the interior trim from behind the seats out to replace a fuel pump. Three bolts hold down the seat belt harnesses. Once released with their plastic housing the exit section of the drainage is in plain sight.
Comes out easily and looks like this….
This is looking from the top. The flap is slighty open and the three plastic spurs stop it from more than closing. From this view alone it’s obviously why you have to be careful with those trombone cleaners. They will dislodge debris but no more. They should be passed through the drain and removed from the underside of the car. Any attempt to clean or retract will screw up the flaps….
This final pic is what you would see if underneath the car looking into the drain…
The NC had three versions of drain cover. Mine is open hole and the trombone cleaner can be used. The next version( I think) is a fixed grill and will have to be dismantled in its entirety to be cleaned. The last was a removal grill so giving the flexibility to use the trombone cleaner again.
Hope this is useful and correct.
The NC has a lot of tiny detail changes over its ten year run such that if your looking at videos how-to’s it’s worth finding ones specific to the three versions if you can.
NB: there is another section of the drain above the part I’ve shown with another flap in it. There is not much to get hold of and I was unable to dislodge mine.
As an aside, I wonder if those flaps do actually seal to stop road noise? Maybe some differential pressure or something? Just a thought as they are quite limp designwise.
