Im sure I saw some warnings about hoods and cold weather for NDs in the manual but can’t find now. I can’t remember if the windows drop to open the door on the ST, if there’s a heavy frost I have to defrost the window / door trim strip to get in my RF. And I’m wary of opening the roof <4 degrees if it’s icy in the folding roof seals…also if there’s heavy frost on the folded RF/ST roof that moisture will all end up in the cabin somewhere as the car warms up!
Driving with the lid down on a sunny but chilly winters day is a joy with a hat on, as I’m a bit of a slap head, because the effective heaters bathe you in nice warm air, but when we all have Electric MX5’s in the near future I assume the heat will be battery generated, so there will be the gentle whistle of cool air over my head and the gentle whistle of the electric motor in my ears
It depends on how far you want to go, as I understand having the heater on in an electric car severely depletes range… just stick with the MX5 until they put the annual tax up to make it unaffordable…
Went out in ours yesterday, dull and Grey, no problem, due to the superb heater

2010 Mk3 hard top
just stick with the MX5 until they put the annual tax up to make it unaffordable…
On a more serious note, I agree, I’m old school, I enjoy the sounds and smells of a sporty engine, big or small, and I have the lid down as much as poss, all year round, I also love the sound of a Ferrari / TVR/ McLaren / Lambo or whatever revving up .
I’m not sure what a future electric sports car will end up like, but as long as it has a soft / RF top then I suppose I’ll take whats coming

Ahh, Mazda’s favourite colour scheme! ![]()

The book of words says don’t drop the roof below 6 degrees on a ND
Too bothered about messing up her hair or liked the look of the car but doesn’t know how to drop the roof. This image is not restricted to MX-5 drivers it never ceases to amaze me how many people have a convertible but don’t use it why bother buying one in the first place they don’t know what they are missing.
I think that’s why a lot of sports car owners are motorcyclists or ex motorcyclists like myself .
It might sound a bit corny but it’s that feeling of freedom and being out there , wind across the bald noggin, the smell of burning leaves on a crisp sunny Autumm day and all that , along with all other owners , me and the missus love it
It’s a good point Bosley
I came from years of motorcycle ownership, into MX5 ownership about 20 years ago and I’ve never looked back (well I do when reversing!
) it is just a great feeling driving top down, there’s nothing else like it!
Barrie
It has a roof…
were did mazda put that
Quite right Barrie. Driving an open-top car is one of life’s great affordable pleasures - even just being a passenger in one ain’t bad either ! The sights, sounds (and even smells) of the English countryside are just sooooooooooooooooooo good !
Except when they’re that of tractor loads of sour silage tipped in the field next door!

Or when you go past a field where there cutting the corn ,and you end up with a car full of straw ask me how I know.
Yep, had that last week, sour silage this week.
Isn’t country life wonderful!
Well it is,
I’d go barmy in a town!
Went storm cloud dodging today, satnav played second fiddle to how black the clouds were. I almost won… had to stop 2 minutes from destination (near Woking) to get the PRHT closed. Sometimes wish I had a rag top. .
Mind you, putting my soft top up isn’t exactly fast ,as I haven’t mastered the contortionist technique of putting it up whilst sitting in it, if in fact it can be done.
Rather than risk pulling muscles and ricking my neck etc I make sure the windows are up, get out , pull it up most of the way, get back in, grab it with both hands and slam it closed, …although putting it down is a joy, undo the latch lower it as far as I can and chuck it back …done
Never ever, in owning 9+ mx5’s, have I been able to put the soft top up whilst sat in the cars! Folk say they can do it with ease though?
Now putting it down is another matter, very easy indeed!
Barrie
I used to be able to do the mk1 when I had one in 1998 and it was new, now I have one and I have to get out… I tried when I first got it but it took about 3 days for my muscles to recover!!! Oooh getting older is terrible
I’m glad its not just me then
