After a little help or guidance. Friend came round this evening with her mk2 1.8 (none vvt) which is running very rough and misfiring. She says it been on and off like the for a few months. So took the leads off and plugs out and gave then a clean with wd40. Still the same. Then went through a sequence of unplugging the leads while it was still running. When taking out the middle two I noticed I couldn’t hear any sparking from the leads unlike the outer two. At the same time i didn’t noticed and change to the engine when unplugging the inner two. Outer two did make a difference.
Was going to try swapping some leads about but then the bloody thing started to work again. Does the sound like a dodgy coil?
Hopefully going to replace the leads tomorrow (you listening crneo ) if that doesn’t work I’ll try the plugs next.
Will that just leave the coil pack or is their anything else I can check?
If it is the coil pack, any places that people recommend cheap? She’s loosing faith in the car as recently she’s had to replace the engine due to a failed crankshaft.
Leads, plugs then coil packs. Not being funny but I wouldn’t risk 2nd hand. You need to make sure you cure the problem. Go with genuine Mazda ones from MX5 parts, much cheaper than main dealer. I had to do mine last year - she’s surweet as anything now
This does sound like a coil pack. If it’s a 1.6, you may struggle to find a secondhand one. I have sold lots this year and two unfilled requests last week. Vicky. not sure why you have reservations about secondhand coil packs - why pay £300+ when you don’t have to ? These are two part coil packs with similar units controlling 2 cylinders each - easy to see if there is a problem with any replacement purchased. I always offer a guarantee with the parts I sell & wouldn’t recommend any purchase without a guarantee.
Cheapest place at the min is ebay for a good s/hand one
Never had any problems with s/hand units, make sure you ask if they are tested, over the last 6 weeks i have had a few off there and the cheapest was a 1.6 Mk 1 for £20 and a 1.8 Mk 1 4 pin for £24 plus others at different prices all tested and all working as test units/fault finders for when owners need my help
Agreed that the 1.6 Mk2 and the 1.8 Mk2.5 are the hardest to get hold of at the min, but i did get a 1.6 Mk2 one for £30,still trying to get my hands on a Mk 2.5 1.8 as a tester
I just think with something like a coil pack I’d rather go with a new one to make sure I solve the problem. Plus, hopefully you’ll then have trouble free motoring for quite a while. If it’s 2nd hand you don’t know how old it is and how many miles it’s done. My 2, for a 1.8 cost £185, which were a lot cheaper than the dealer price. But, everyone’s different and everyone is working to different budgets
As long as the coils you bought were original Mazda, you did very well. Far better off buying original Mazda parts secondhand than aftermarket coil packs for these cars.
Sorry Rob it is not for sale as it was bought as a tester for fault finding if i get no fault codes and need units for swapping, try Andrew at Autolink,he as just brought in some Mk 2’s for breaking other than that try junk yard dog(john) on the nutz forum, tell him you have spoken to me.
Hello, sorry for not replying sooner. Thanks for all your comments. My friends still have loads of problems. Sometime it doesn even want to start now. Had alook today when it wouldnt start. Unplugged one of the leads and it fired straight away. Same again middle two cylinders had no “clicking” sound from the leads. Then it started working fine and then their were “clicking” again. Sp to me it definatley looks like the coil pack to me.
So on the look out for a second hand or aftermarker replacement.
