Running Your MX-5 on a Shoestring

I find it hard to understand why anyone would spend their hard-earned cash on one of the finest sports cars ever made and then cut corners on running costs. There are endless questions about cheap tyres, E10/supermarket fuel etc.

If you own an MX-5 treat it to the best fuel, tyres, oil, brakes, suspension and servicing. Do this and you will get the best out of your car. Choose the cheap option and you will be limping around with poor handling, low power, reduced grip and, frankly, you might as well have bought a Nissan Micra CC (probably in pink).

Your car deserves the best.

I’m with you. I personally don’t see the point in having anything nice if it’s not gonna be looked after, but not everyone is in the same boat.

It is a budget accessible sports car though and not everyone that drives them is an enthusiast. My mum has had 2, an na eunos and an nc. She barely serviced them, turned up the stereo if it made any funny noises, put any old unleaded in there from whatever garage was closest and was not really interested in cherishing the car - but enjoyed it nonetheless.

It’s horses for courses. :+1:

So he put a V8 in it.

Fair comment but I just feel a bit sad when I see a neglected thoroughbred like the MX-5.

I’ve seen plenty like that, in fact any car treated badly isn’t great😞

I don’t know about thoroughbred, my MX5 cost 3 grand well over a decade ago, has been regularly serviced by myself using Castrol oil, not Royal Purple, and wears a set of Avon tyres. I even used to fill it up at Sainsbury’s…

Still runs sweet as a nut and puts a smile on my face.
