Just discovered a rather large paint chip on my lower arch and it’s rusted about little finger nail size, the current weather is holding me back from doing anything major but should I be looking at doing a temporary fix until weather changes or just leave it, didn’t know if spraying with WD40 or a dab of grease or anything would help.
The wing is made of very thin, high strength steel.
It may be that due to the lack of thickness there you are chasing your tail to repair it as you cannot get deep enough to remove the rust without going through the wing. It is common for that to happen at the indicator repeaters but I do not have a good feeling about it.
Might be worth using some rust converter? I’ve used KuRust on other 5’s in the past with some success. Other products are available scrape off loose rust (if there is any) then apply to the affected area.
I did my wheel arches last year, better weather of course and ground the area back to clean metal, treated with POR15 then primer and top coat of paint. Always difficult to touch in a rust bleb but at least get something on it and if poss remove the rust until you can do a proper job.
Don’t leave it exposed as the surface rust will become pitting which will create far more work.
I have used clear nail varnish or similar, not mine you understand, just to seal the damage and prevent accelerated rust until the warmer weather and a proper repair.
Thanks guys have some kurust in the garage just didn’t know what to put on top after treatment…what about a dab of hammerite on it or touch up paint to see me into better weather just thinking what’s in the garage at the moment car is only used in dry weather but unfortunately kept outside
My mistake with seeing rust I was in shock when typing.It’s the lower bottom of the wing about two inch up from all edges no bubbling around it,not the dreaded arch rust just a big stone chip. just stuck out like a sore thumb think it might have happened using works industrial power washer and got under a small chip making it bigger.
