Rust on rear right side NA

Hi, i have some rustbubbling on my 1990 NA, it’s on the rear right side . It was there for a while in a very light form but now it’s getting serious. Any idea how labour intensive this is and what might be the (approx) cost of the repair/replacement (at bodyshop as i’m not that handy…) of that wing? I want to have it done properly as i intend to keep the car, for the rest it’s rustfree.

Yup been there as have legions before you.
Like me.

Yes it’s a Mk2 but the issue is basically the same. I’d have your inner sill boroscoped while they are there as well.

Budget around £400 to £600 per side for a pukka professional arch (& sill?) panel remetalling…depending on who you talk with. To include a good pukka anti rot injection.
Anyone who says circra £2/300 will make a decent visual and very temporary fist of it if your car wont mind having lots of Daily Star & filler shoved up it.

Thx, 400 or 600 gbp seems very acceptable to me, i was expecting worse…no need for the sill repair as it has been done 5 years ago (and still ok). Does that amount also include the re-paint?

Should do.

I dont want to be negative, but after 33 years, I would be surprised if that were the only place where rust has taken hold. I would get a highly competent place to check out the underbody thoroughly. You dont want to spend 600 quid and find that more expensive repairs are just around the corner.

Good luck! I hope for the best for you!

David

The bubbling is so minor that it could be poor adhesion of the rubbery stonechip paint. It’s less and less likely as time goes on, but it was quite common on NAs. Most likely, there is rust on the inside which has caused a pinhole under the paint.

Thx all, when i typed rustree i ment no other “suspected” area for the moment as both sills had been done a few years ago but indeed it could appear anytime/anywhere.

The photo is of the wheel arch not the sill. The arch is rotten. Its possible its hiding some old accident damage.

I had a S-Limited, ex-show car. I know the first UK owner had some corrective paintwork done when it was imported.

When I got it, there were two tiny blebs in the repainted area. After a bit of sanding

Inner and outer wing failed. A dent had been filled. Filler is hygroscopic, and the metal rusted out.
