I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Rust patch
Hi everyone, I recently purchased a lovely MK1 Merlot which is generally solid as it has supposedly been garaged and undersealed most of its life. However, there is a spot of rust on the front of the driver’s side sill. Just looking for some opinions on quite how bad it is and roughly what might need doing. Unfortunately I can only seem to attach one image as I am a new member. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to the club mate (im up in Blyth)
Only way to truly find out is to get at it with wire brush at least, possibly small orbital sander to see what lurks beneath.
If its not too bad, plenty of treatments out there.
I used ‘Buzzweld rust encapsulator’ on my NC1 followed up with Dinitrol products , then obviously the colour match top coat.
It’ll have some crud behind that lower section of wing. Over the years it collects and rots out, needs unfastening at the bolts , really needs the wing off for a proper look and treatment.
Thanks all. Managed to snap another pic from underneath which looks a bit worse than what I thought. Not sure if it changes anyone’s answer. Bonus question: It was last undersealed about 6 years ago but has only done about 8k miles in that time. Would it be worth reapplying?
Don’t reapply anything until you’ve had look behind that section of the wing, re my abive post.
A borrowed pic showing what could lurk behind the lower front wing…
