Rustproofing

I’m after thoughts on rustproofing please. I know the MX5 doesn’t have a great reputation for rust, and the mk3 is no exception. Not sure how keen I am about getting underneath and brushing and spraying waxoyl and probably getting more on me, so I’ve been looking on tinterweb and found these guys in Norwich - http://www.eggettsteamcleaning.co.uk/page2.htm - they steam clean underneath then apply waxoyl by spray, but looking at prices not sure if this would include getting into all nooks and crannies, like the sills and box sections. Also not sure if it’s wise to steam then waxoyl as this could trap the moisture.
My car has some surface rust underneath, but nothing major that I can see, and never had any MOT advisories (checked online) for corrosion. It’s not an everyday car, it’s garaged and I probably won’t use it much in winter.
Thanks

Get some ramps and pile it on mate thats what I am doing did ther back end last year going for the front this year, a brush a and a few spray cans for the hard to get areas… music on in the garage very relaxing ,

Considering it as I’ve got ramps and a garage, but not sure I could be confident that the rustproofing had got to everywhere it’s needed without a compressor. Plus I have arthritis and I think my arms could seize up holding a brush for hours on end above my head! Surprised

In regards to rust proofing it is essential in my view that you have a wheels and liners off job with all palstic shield removed otherwise horrors develop with out you noticing.

Furthermore it is also essential you get the cavities all done in doing so it stops or at least prevent to some degree the potential mess of rust eating from  inside out.

Personally I would use dinitrol far more professional than waxoyl.

Phil,

I was looking at getting mine done at Rust Buster in Spalding (www.rust.co.uk). It’s a bit of a trek, but when I enquired they seemed thorough, with a great price, and would happily drop you off at the train station if required.

I still want mine done, but I’ll probably wait a couple of years just incase it invalidates any kind of warranty should rust develop early - that would be my luck…!

If you go with them I’d be very interested in your experience!

Hi Mark,

I’ve been in contact with them already! My sister lives in Spalding, and it’s only an hour away for me so not too bad. Looks like they do a great job, and includes all cavities, arches, doors, sills etc. plus the dinatrol underseal looks nice and neat IMHO. Not made a decision yet, but definitely considering them. Someone else is getting me a quote from somewhere local, so I’ll weigh up the options then.

I think you’re booked in at STS next Sunday aren’t you?
