Rusty sill time

Hi - I have a Mk 1 that has been off the road for some time. I am hoping to get it back on the road but job number one would be the sills which are gone inside and out on both sides at the rear - standard MX prob I believe! They are not horrendously bad but need some work cutting and welding. Looking for a recommendation for someone that could help me with this at a reasonable price. Live in South Hams Devon nr Kingsbridge. If anyone can help to recommend that would be much appreciated.

In Devon but not quite that local for you is Exbourne garage, at Exbourne near Okehampton. Cary there has done work for a number of MX5 owners including me and his work can be recommended. They have a website.

Many thanks for the recommendation. Not on the door step but not too far to go either for good workmanship. Will look into that and get in touch. :+1:

Hi starrydog and welcome to the forum.
I live near Kingsbridge too; quite a number of MX5s down here and they work really well.
Sorry unable to recommend a local repairer for this work.
MX5s are quite specialised, even welding repairs, so a general garage/welder may struggle.
You can purchase the inner and outer sill repair panels. Perhaps an idea to read up on this commonly required repair and have a go at it yourself if you have a friend/relation with a MIG welder.

Hi There neighbour!
There do seem to be quite a few MX5s down this way. Keen to get mine back amongst them! I had wondered about giving it a go but never done welding before. My brother in law was going to give a hand and went on a 5 week welding course - but failed!! Said it was too difficult, which makes me a bit reluctant although I am sure it would save a heap of cash. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry to hear that your BIL failed a welding course.
I wouldn’t go on any course that would entertain me :slightly_smiling_face: but if I did with my welding skill level, would no doubt fail too.
Having said that completed many personal welding jobs successfully.
I would suggest reading up on this and looking at some of the MX5restorer videos. I’m sure there is one for the MX5 MK1 rear sills.
If your BIL has a MIG and some gas/wire, go for it.
Best way to weld with thin car metal is stitch welding to avoid heat buildup and distortion. Stitch welding requires zero skill. You simply aim to arc on the stronger metal part and move weld flow to weaker part in a series of tack welds.
Worse case scenario, you make a mess of it and pay a professional to sort it out but with the forward planning a garage without MX5 experience would not be able to invest in, you will most likely succeed.

Sound advice - thanks for that. Think I will look into it a bit more and see how brave I feel. Quite like the ideal of welding but rather close to the fuel tank worries me a bit!!
