Rusty tow eye thread

Hi all

I was at a track day recently and one of things they ask you to do is fit your towing eyes. So I started to screw the back one in and it was the squeakiest noise I have ever experienced and all the dogs in a 5 mile radius started barking. So it was noisy but fine. When doing the front there was no squeak, but an altogether more sinister noise. A kind of grinding crunching noise. I have a pull to see if it had taken the thread, but it gave no resistance at all and came out with a load of rusty gunk. I did manage to get it to stay in there, so there’s some thread left.

Has anyone had this issue?

Is there an easy fix?

What will this cost to fix?

thanks

sounds like rust/corrosion; a good blow ofcompressed air & a soaking with lots of WD40 should help followed by another good blow out . it’s a fairly long thread as I recall so there should be lots left to tighten up safely.
