So sad, I have seven years and 90,000 miles of unrivalled motoring pleasure and countless friendships to thank Tom Motano for.
My sincerest condolences to Tom’s family, colleagues, friends and many fans.
Sad news indeed, condolences to his family
Rest in Peace Tom, you will be missed.
A nice tribute article here. I’m sure there will be more in the coming days:

RIP Matano san.
As did a lot of us, we met Tom at a couple of the national rallies. Always had time, a smile and a few kind words for us. RIP Tom.
Sad day indeed, RIP
Very sad news, I had the pleasure of chatting with him at last year’s national rally and he was a fascinating and very friendly person.
Very sad news, Mr Matano changed the fun factor in car driving since 1989……without him we would probably drive a front wheel driven hot-hatch instead of a rwd lightweight blast….the only way we can honour him is by keeping our fives running as long as possible .
Very sad news. It took a Japanese designer to define what a roadster for the 1990s should be like, basically a reliable version of the 1960s Lotus Elan with a few more creature comforts and space for a USA sized driver!
Having met Tom and chatted with him briefly at the National Rally, when I was marshalling last year, I was was struck by his humility, his humour and his humanity - a truly brilliant designer who was the Father of the car we all love. A great man - he gave so much. and will be greatly missed
My thoughts and are with his family and colleagues.
My car is already in memory of my late husband - it’s now in memory of its designer too.
I will put black ribbons on the mirrors to honour a great man - and I’ve emailed the club to ask why this isn’t headlining on this website news page!
There is now a fitting and lovely picture of Tom scrolling through on the main home page of the MX5OC website
About time - but so happy that Tom is being honoured.
Thanks to the OC
Elaine,
I have emailed you back, and for the update of others on your request on headlines on the website.
A lot of inaccurate information [about Tom] has circulated online, and we’ve wanted to ensure that anything we share is thoughtful, kind and correct. It was not a race to memorialise Tom, but about honouring him in a dignified, respectful and meaningful way.
As part of this we were also able to stop the presses on Monday on the magazine - to make amendments to the next edition with a cover honouring him and small memorial piece within.
