I have used Saga on and off for eleven years, my mx5 has been insured with them for the last 3 years but my Jeep (bog standard and owned for 15 years) that they used to insure is no longer welcome, they declined to insure it without explanation!
Saga also declined to insure my house when I asked for a quote 4 years ago because an underground fresh water drainpipe cracked and caused subsidence to a corner of my house in the early 1980’s. (all repaired 30 years ago).
Chopped and changed many times over the years but now both my MX-5 and my wife’s Mazda 6 are with Saga. Might not always be the absolute cheapest but good value. Protected no claims policies for both of us. One thing I do like is that if you ever have cause to call them there are no menus to go through and you get to speak to somebody who knows what they are doing. Always somebody with English as their first language and can complete any changes or answer any questions with zero hassle. Nothing worse than a call centre operator who doesn’t understand your question. Can’t comment on claims as I haven’t had any but I’ve always found them very professional in other respects.
I check around getting quotes every year, and Saga always seem to be double what I end up paying. And I don’t go for the cheapest but the best cover at a reasonable price.
Last year I had both cars with John Lewis, but this year the MX5 is with Admiral at £196 and the Vectra still with JL at £175.
Totally agree with Peter-B here, I tried Saga several years ago (before I hit 80 - in age!) and despite no claims in the UK at all for the last 49 years - truly, though I can prove most of them, they quoted me over £600 - I just laughed, and hung up. Same with a leading broker (Swinton) who despite repeated efforts to get me to sign up with them, still quote ridiculous sums. “But we give you £50 cashback” - after three months!
Been with the well known (Nautical) outfit for several years now, and a multi-car policy for the last two.
Premium for this year shot up, but when I rang them and said “It looks like you’re giving my discount to my son, rather than both of us” I got a fresh quote which was a lot more favourable for both of us.
Some insurers will no longer touch anyone over 70, and it’s even harder to find someone who will insure you over 80, but the policy is with Aviva, and they cover me for most of the mods on my car (IIRC you get the choice of around 6) plus 90 days European cover for both of us. protected NCD on both, plus legal cover.
I tried a couple of the Clubs insurers, one you have to ring (At least 1/2 hour on the phone?) and the other was a waste of time. When I bought the five I was originally with AON, but they passed it on to Footman James who refused me cover after the first year, “We only cover classic cars” - the car was 11 years old then. AON was good, but I think they became fed up paying a premium back to the Club.
Apologies for this question (however there was no faqs easily accessible on the saga site), but being 47 years old - would Saga reject an application for insurance from me? Many thanks
Just bringing this thread up to the surface again, bear with.
Insurance time folks, yawn still it’s better than watching D Trump and co plastered all over our screens and in our earholes.
An attempt by my current insurers to contact me this week failed so the renewals posted landed on the mat this morning.
So we begin again with finding A) a decent company B) a decent price.
I have read that Saga for some are very good value and I think a decent company re any claims, I don’t know?
Would you believe this time I have had the best quote ever from them and I am thinking of going with it. Must add this isn’t for my MX-5 but my other car, a SEAT.
Anyways for a modified Mk3 I’m going elsewhere for quotes, I’m sure Saga wanted over £900 (I remember falling about laughing) last year but I guessed they don’t take kindly to modified.
It seems so far my current insurers want a good deal more for covering a standard boring SEAT daily car than a modified MX-5 this time.
So on one policy I have reduced it by more than £100 like for like cover with Saga, just waiting on the others to come through now.
I’ve had multi car cover before with various companies and find them no advantage to go that route, even though they claim it may be cheaper. Aviva was one I remember, they got too expensive for me.
SAGA refused to quote me as the MX-5 was modified, they then pestered me to death until I finally said to them, “if you can’t quote my camper, take me off your database” They agreed, and couldn’t quote me as it was American!.. good riddance
to Saga, also pestered me I have a Honda CRV 2.2 oh and by the way I also have 1991 Eunos 1.6 V Spec, yes to the CRV no to the Eunos, why I asked why no to the Eunos, IMPORT IMPORT IMPORT, BY BY BY am gone, Rob.
Have both my MX5 and my wife’s Skoda Rapid insured with Saga. Rapid renewal premium up 30%! Phone discussion resulted in a few pounds off for reducing the expected mileage, and another reduction for being a loyal customer - £10! Have now moved to Direct Line for the Skoda, £20 cheaper than last year’s Saga quote. (I don’t need the foreign use part of the insurance, and it isn’t worth £80 anyway, the rest is close enough comparatively, and replicates my house contents anyway)
No amount of pointing out that we have both a second car, and our house buildings and contents, insured with Saga made any difference. What I did get was a couple of scenarios which sounded like the sort of scare tactics for which Saga have come in for some criticism lately
I was with them 2 year ago, moved because they couldn’t explain why I could get the same cover online with them cheaper than their renewal quote by post.
They didn’t want to match that quote either, just a paltry discount for good will, so I said match it or I’m off.
Had my home insurance with them too, so their loss of 3 insurance policies in one swoop.
I find that it’s the same story whichever insurer you go with. Good deals to start with then when they think they’ve got you hooked, bang, silly quotes start to appear. In the words of the old Smokey Robinson song, "You’ve got to shop around!
