- My model of MX-5 is: ND
- I’m based near: Newcastle__
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:Has anyone claimed under warranty for a sagging driver’s seat.
how old is the car ? I know someone who tried very hard to get this looked at under warranty on an ND and failed.
Hi, the car is a 19 Reg with about 3,200 on the clock. I’m taking it into the dealers on the 7th of October for warranty inspection. Prior to buying the car, I did note second-hand versions had a saggy driver’s seat compared to the 55 reg Mk 3 I had just sold. I had supposed some drivers had too many pies but at a sylphlike 80Kg, I did not expect to have this problem. I’ll report back after the 7th but if anyone else has this problem it would be good to know.
Cheers
The seats in the ND are more like a hammock arrangement than the the previous model’s padded seats and as a consequence there will be an initial stretch/sag after initial use. Mine have sagged a bit after 5k miles but they are no less comfortable. I think that the leather may initially stretch to conform with the supporting metal structure underneath when sat on and no further. I think that Mazda will say the seat has not failed and has just “settled”. If they carry on sagging it might be another matter. Let us know how you get on with the dealer. Cheers.
Hi Grandpa
I think it is a trait of the N D series,i had a N.D 1 which did it quite quickly but never got any worse,i had it for 22000 miles, the person i sold it to has now driven a total of 30000 miles, and it is not really any worse, the comfort stays the same,i now have a N.D 2 which has done 13000 miles and has slight sagging,i think it is the design how the seat is constructed,i have heard that there is a way that you can get rid of the sagging i think somebody said a low heat gun,but it will then come back,it does not bother me as it seems to just have the initial sag and then get no worse, but i do agree with you after all these years of producing the N.D you would of thought they could of cured the problem.
Other than that an amazing car,the ND2 is def a improved car compared to the ND1.
All best Simon
I think I have read somewhere where a mod was carried out by removing the seat and putting an approx 12 inch square piece of solid type upholsterers foam on to the bottom of the seat above the support straps
Sounds like a plan if it becomes a real issue
Hi, I’ve also raised the same question on Miata.net, interestingly no response so far from the land of LHD cars. I’m going to try a photograph of the underside of both seats to see if there is any difference between them. I’m alert to the fact that UK cars are in fact RHD versions of EU cars and wonder if the seats are different.
Cheers
I raised this with the supplying dealer of mine a couple of weeks back (ND2 GT, 6k miles from new) Noticeable deformation (well noticeable to me!) anyway. Mazda have commented “normal wear and tear”, so I’m going to think about what to do next, since it does irritate me on a nearly new car, and slightly dents the otherwise joyous ownership experience.
I have also not seen any complaints about this on Miata.net. For those with a long torso, it might be a useful feature, to keep their heads away from the roof, and enable better vision under the mirror. I am tall and have great difficulty keeping my eyes on traffic lights that are positioned too high for me when I am at the front of the queue.

You are correct, It was me and there’s a full guide on the Facebook ND Page
