Samsung phones changing the Gallery back up

Keep getting pop-ups on my S8 about the way the Gallery (where I have several million pics stored) is going to change quite shortly.
Anyone else had this and can advise which is the best option?
One option is to let them move all my stuff to Microsoft One Drive or stay with Samsung Cloud - I think.

I never trust ANY cloud providers.

Think of a cloud as being an unreliable anchor, it locks you in, then a couple of years later bites you at the most inconvenient moment.

All my short term backups are done locally on some big fat Synology RAID boxes sitting on a clever UPS, each with long term backups every couple of weeks to alternate big removable hard-drives. One needs discipline to keep track, but it is an awful lot faster than trawling through a cloud.

Phone pictures are small, so you can fit an awful lot into 4TB.

Similar to @RichardFX, I have no trust in the “cloud” - all it is is other people’s computers.

My pictures (whether taken with a telephone handset or a real camera) are manually transferred to my PC, where they get picked up by my backup regime (three 6Tb external disks, encrypted, and at least one of which is always in a physically separate location). Yes, it’s a bit more effort, but I know that my important data (including photographs) is safe.

A key point, this allows a measure of human-readable logging that will not be messed up by mixes of file systems.
eg Date and location/subject as part of the folder name, not just machine modifiable attributes; this is essential for future reference and quick searching.

Manual transfer allows for ruthless pruning at source while still fresh in the mind, essential in any large collection, just keep the most valuable memories.

Good pics, the magic ones worth keeping in hundreds shot, need their own titles and extra info. to help other minds, or our own faded memories years later.

I’m fairly sure people had the same view of fire or the wheel, then the loom or the television. Times are a changing. Upload them to the cloud, easily accessible and forever available.

Will last long after the hard drives power supply packs in or that laptop gets a virus.

Only available until the operator decides to change the rules for storing your stuff on their machines, or substantially increases the charges for doing so

I assume there is a deep irony running through that comment?

And Onedrive? Any comment I might make? No, I could not afford the legal fees…

Ive been using the OneDrive system for many years (even when it was previously called Windows Live Folders ) and have never had an issue. Yes you can pay but also theres always been the free option. Now with the 365 Office system you get up to 1TB each for up to 6 users so the ÂŁ50 or so you can get the package for on Amazon etc during black Friday makes it a very worthwhile cost (never subscribe, always buy the code in the retail package, it will allow you to add to you account to extend your period)

Also its worth remembering that with Onedrive it can be set so the files are also always on your pc so if something happened its just a matter of saving them somewhere else.

Being an IT specialist for many years I can see the benefit of One external device as well but to be honest the Onedrive system is pretty robust.

Agreed, provided high speed internet is available.
However, I would not begin to consider depending on the operator.

Haven’t got a Samsung phone, are using a Samsung app or Google photos?

I know Google photos is going start charging for any new storage used after June for most users, but existing uploaded photos aren’t affected.

Whatever about the robustness of the cloud, and the network connections to it, there’s also a huge Privacy issue involved.

Personally, I don’t want all my photographs (or any of my other data) being stored on somebody else’s computers, when you have no idea who (employees, hackers, governments, etc) will be able to access it.

Apols for not responding to your answers… been feeling a bit ropey after 2nd Vacc.

I have now backed-up the phone pics to my pc. and they are backed up on Google. The pops-ups threatening doom to my Gallery have stopped appearing on the phone. I hope thats the end of it.

I really appreciate the expertise on all manner of things on this forum and the willingness to share it.
