Sat Nav in Mk 4

Hi all,

Just wondering how many MK 4 owners have or had problems with their Sat Navs? I certainly have. I’ve taken it back a couple of times to the Dealer

and it still does not work. Again it’s at the Dealers today and having just spoken to them by phone they have said that they have put in another sim from another MK 4

to see if this solves the problems, which are: a large percentage of post codes can not be typed in in full, a large percentage of place names can not be typed in( including cities not just smaller places), when a destination has been accepted it will often take you a very circuitous route and returning you to the point of departure!!

I will let you know what the result is but until then, anyone else??

Thanks

Yes, I have experienced all the above, it is a dreadful system. I bought a phone mount and use Tomtom on my phone instead.

Why spend £600 on a sim card when you can get a better system for free on your phone and use it in all your vehicles, in my case two MX5’s and two bikes.

Satnav is poor compared to £100 Garmin - which I always take when touring or in an unfamiliar area. I had a few issues with boot failures about 9 months ago but the software update has fixed it (so far).

Not had any problems with mine, even taking the SD card out (it doesn’t have a SIM) and updating via PC wasn’t an issue…

Never had any issues with either of my Mazdas - both the MX5 and the 3 run the MZD and its always worked perfectly. When you say postcodes wont enter correctly - how do you mean? I used to work for Mazda so know these systems inside and out if I can help in any way!

Also with the updates - never do it when you are going to bed shortly - mine took literally HOURS to update!

My Satnav worked perfectly when coming home from Denmark last Sunday,  It worked in Denmark, Germany and Holland,  The only hick up was when we docked in Harwich,  Had to wait until I was off the ferry until it would give the route home, not that I needed it.

Hmm, I always do sat nav updates overnight! Simply because the 7GB of data takes a while on my copper connection at only 5Mbit/s.

However, the Garmin is usually quicker than the MZD for similar sized files and so far has taken roughly 2/3 of the time on each update.  I don’t allow any software to auto background updates (except the virus checker), just choose tell it to do an update at a convenient time when the PC is doing nothing else.

If I was to rate the Garmin Nuvi system it would be 9/10, but the MZD only 2/10.

Both work; but the user interface on the Garmin in the car is light years better (even my technophobic wife was happy to use it from scratch without a manual, after wanting to take a sledgehammer to the MZD and burn its manual), and the Garmin also has lifetime free maps and makes excellent decisions based on the free live traffic info without needing to buy an expensive ‘smart’ phone.

The Garmin’s weakness is that the Basecamp software on the PC for off-line route planning with lots of way-points etc is not up to the highly intuitive standards of the actual device in the car.

If I could swap out the MZD satnav and replace it with the Garmin system I’d do it instantly.

I have to admit the Mazda Sat Nav is not the best I have used.
How do enter Postcodes? I have not managed to find how to do that!!

To enter a Postcode do the following:

Go to the Nav screen;
Select New Destination from the bottom menu;
Select Find Address;
In the Town field, enter the Postcode;
Select Navigate to.

Regards,
Simon.

As Simon said but also remember to enter the space in the middle of the code.

Good point.  Write as writ!

That is exactly what I do, or try to do. Probably about 30% of the time it works but 70% of the time it wont accept the full postcode. Seems the Dealer is keeping the car for a third day tomorrow

The worst part about this is that will be the third day of driving the courtesy car-Ford KA Edge, not recommended, I promise!

Hi,

well as I said this is the update
after car in Dealership for 3 days it was returned and after 2 days of ‘testing’ the satnav it works perfectly!! I did ask what the problem had
been but the technician who had spent time on the problem has gone on a course so will try and give him a call next week
prolem solved,whatever it was

I’m interested to know if you managed to get a reply from the technician as mine keeps freezing and takes me on some totally illogical routes …?

Thanks,

Chris

Never did manage to speak with the ‘Technician’ but whatever he did, knowingly or otherwise, it has worked well ever since so musn’t grumble too much

Just tripped over the 50k mark with no issues whatsoever Would be nice to know when big bills might appear but hey ho life is just not like that!

Hope yours is giving you as much enjoyment is mine is to me!!

I’ve only had a problem with mine once, when it appeared to be working, giving turn directions etc. but in fact it had our position wrong.  This was en route from the ferry at Hook of Holland to a hotel a few miles away.  I wouldn’t have been surprised at it taking some time to get a new GPS lock, but it clearly ‘thought’ it had one.

Navigation was interesting to say the least.  I got several instructions to turn right or left when the only turn in view was a cycle path, of which there are a lot in Holland.

The fix?  Turn it off and on again. I wonder if that’s what they learn on the training course?

New maps issued February.  Just got the SD card updating for the new season.

In general it works OK, but I don’t have a traffic subscription which means it relies solely on the very patchy and not very timely (read not much use) RDS-TMC.  But google maps beats it easily for routing, and as already said a £100 portable satnav typically has a better interface although my Garmin Nuvi offers some fairly dodgy routes as well - and for some reason always crashes on the north side of Newcastle around Gosforth/Jesmond.

I have a Brodit phone mount so I can use Google maps when I really don’t want to be lost/delayed. And a map!

Well it’s sort of ok , but my ND one doesn’t like some addresses without street names and it is out of date. I forgot to register in time -FFS what a palava when Waze is up to the minute , literally ,and completely intuitive to use.
