Sat Nav Updates

Just spent a whole chunk of my life downloading and updating to the latest maps which are dated March 2018 and I am surprised and disappointed to find that the Forth Road Bridge is still showing as the main route over the Firth of Forth. It does have the Queensferry Crossing on it but it not mapped as it should be. If something as major as this is not in a 2018 update I am in doubt that the maps are actually ‘up to date’. If I had paid for the update I would be demanding my money back.

I had expected that something as major as this would have been updated by now. My cheap and cheerful Garmin has it shown correctly after the last update which I did some months ago.

If anyone has updated and found that the Queensferry Crossing is shown correctly please let me know so I can look into what I have done wrong.

I have just been on the HERE web site  https://mapcreator.here.com/mapcreator/54.2353,-0.3828,12,0,0  and it is shown correctly. As I understand things this what the map is based on so why is my update not the same. Even more confused now so I would very much appreciate it if you could look at your maps and see how it is shown.

Will take a look at mine tomorrow (currently on the December one), there should be an infotainment release soon too.

The TomTom in my NC is very good although updating the subscription is a PITA. Take a backup and remember that a factory reset often magically restores LIVE connectivity.

It navigates far more effectively than Mazda’s latest effort in my 2018 Mazda 6, which is just bizarre in its choice of routes and doesn’t obviously know about traffic (it may do so transparently, but I don’t trust it).  You may have that one.

Hi R, What does your 6 show for the two bridges? It is the same system as in the ND.

I’ll look tonight amd let you know!

Ok…mine ONLY shows the old Forth Road Bridge. March 2018 car. I think I need to read the manual and find out how to get a map update.

Hi R,

Many thanks for looking.

This is a good page to start your adventure!   http://infotainment.mazdahandsfree.com/howto-windows-free?language=en-EU  It took 5 hours to do the download and update the SD card, remember to do the back up.

If/when you have done an update please let me know what you see then, thanks.

According to Mazda’s website (which may be wrong; it doesn’t even recognise JMZGL VIN numbers), the most up to date map for mine is Dec 2017. Anyway, I’ll update mine and see what happens.

mine was less than 20 minutes, including retrieving the card from the car.

make sure you have the new mazda download “app”which has improved transfer times dramatically

Updated now: the new bridge has appeared but it’s showing as a minor road, while the old bridge is the main A90. This probably means the routing goes for the A-road bridge.

I can’t absolutely test it as I’m in Swindon (rather west of Edinburgh) so all routes I plot to Dunfermline use the Kincardine Bridge. The Mazda satnav doesn’t allow a remote start point to be programmed, unlike TomTom. If it did, I’d pretend I was in Edinburgh.

Many thanks, just confirms that the latest in Mazda world is in fact out of date in the normal world. Poor show!

I have a MX5 ND sat nav 2017. I received an email from Mazda early 2018 saying that there was an update available for the sat nav maps. I went through the process and updated on Mar 2018. I have x checked the Forth x ing and found that the original bridge is showing as the route. The location of the new bridge xing is showing as !!! a minor route. Mazda have not updated to show the new route arrangement !!! What else is NOT updated. There is now a western by pass built in Aberdeen all be it not yet open but the roads are all in place this is not showing !!

Hi D,

Thanks for the input much appreciated.

My conclusion is that Mazda will not pay for the ‘latest’ mapping preferring to go for the cheaper option of ‘just out of date’ mapping. I have checked the master maps at Here and they show the correct mapping.

All down to cost or is that greed?

In around four months time the earlier cars like mine will be three years old and the free map updates will end. Looking at the update system the cost for an additional three years is over 180 Euros.

Might be worth having a look on eBay. There are quite a few sellers offering new cards for under £50. As with the original cards once it has been installed and driven for 100km or 63 miles it will then be locked to the car and can be updated by the Mazda toolbox for another three years.

These cards almost certainly are not made by or under license from the original supplier. Don’t want to use any other words to describe them. However our other car, a Nissan Juke, has built in sat nav. There is no ability to update the map except by purchasing a new card, updated cards are issued once a year. As the car was three years old when we purchased it the map was well out of date. Rather than paying Nissan £100+ I bought a new card on eBay. It works perfectly and saved me a load of dosh.

It would also appear that an eBay card is all that is needed to turn an SEL or Sport into an SEL nav or Sport nav. When first released the cars were available without the nav option and I believe the price difference was £600. I’m guessing that a lot of buyers thought this a rip off and bought without the option. Mazda simply dropped these models and from that point ripped everybody off!

Wanted to pass this info on before the day when many of our cards will stop updating.

The routing and traffic avoidance (when you create a WiFi hotspot on your phone, which is silly to have to do) are poor too. It sees the traffic in real time but doesn’t seem to bother routing around it. Still, I wouldn’t buy a car for the satnav. I can stick a perfectly functional £100 TomTom to the windscreen if it comes to that.
