Scuttle panel fix issues

Hi all
I have just bought a 2010 MX5 NC and had a little water in the passengers foot well.
I bought the repair kit and set about replacing the gaskets under the scuttle panel.
This is where it started to go a little wrong, a previous owner had already been there and made a dogs dinner of the repair with things not clipped back in place correctly and an awful lot of black silicone.
I removed all of the previous bodge and the old gaskets to discover the metal around the gaskets had been severely bent. The new gaskets would not clip in even though i straightened the metal as best i could.
I layed down a bead of silicone around the hole and pushed the new gasket in follwed by another layer of silicone around the reveal making a good seal around the gasket to the scuttle metal.
Do you think this will suffice or is the click in very important, if so what would you recommend to get the metal flat enough for the gaskets to click in?
Thanks in advance G

I think plenty of decent mastic is the way to go with these fixes. I didn’t bother removing the plastic insert and replacing it, read this can butcher the metal around the hole as you’ve discovered. I think a more gentle approach and cut it away is the answer if replacing, seems like they’ve tried levering it out with a large flathead screwdriver sort of job, it’s thin metal there.
If you think it’s done the job then just check it over annually to make sure the seal isn’t breaking down.

Silicone has its uses but not here. A good spread of mastic like DumDum is what you want.

Thanks for all the advise, after a good wash and a couple of heavy rain showers the floor is nice and dry.
I will check it again next year for any issues.
Thanks again
