My model of MX-5 is: 2016 ND
it’s recently bought and I wanted to update the map since map version is quite old.
but I realized the file size (7791.39 mb) is larger than the the space of the SD card (7572 mb).
I don’t want to corrupt the data in the current SD card.
Should I get a new SD card before I process the update?
Use a PC to copy the contents of the original SD card to a new 16GB or 32GB SD card freshly formatted as FAT32 to make sure it really is clean.
Don’t waste time trying anything bigger than 32GB in the Mazda headunits.
The spacious new 16GB or 32GB can then be updated with the latest files and it will work OK in the car, and you still have your old original card. I did this with our 2016 Mazda3 until they wanted money for the updates.
Of course these cards will only work in your car and not in anybody else’s because of the code files tied to your car’s system,
The other thing you can do is update to Carplay/Android Auto for free uptodate maps!
Surely the space on the SD card now is not relevant as the old map will be removed before the new map is installed during the update so more space will be freed up.
If you want the full set you need a bigger card. You get the option to drop eastern Europe/Russia to update the 8GB card.
I can confirm that a simple copy to a new 16GB card will allow you to substitute it and do a full update.
The new map is bigger than the old. It does not fit an empty 8GB card!
This has been the case for several different sat navs I’ve come across, both OEM and add-on.
Some with built-in 8GB storage limits offer an expansion slot which can then accept a chip with an extra 32GB and the maps and other useful data overflow onto that.
Is surprises me that the original SD card in an ND is not large enough to accommodate a map update.
Amazing but true
