Hello. I’ve been keeping an eye on ebay for a few bits I’d like for my mx5. I’m quite tempted by the cobalt (or similar) ss exhaust back box. I’m awere that performance gains claimed by the manufacturers are optimistic at best, I’d just like a bit extra noise. Anyway I have noticed that many of the second hand cobalt back boxs I’ve seen have sold at close to or sometimes more than the price of brand new ones listed on ebay. Is this just a case of people getting carried away with bidding or is there something I have missed? Perhaps they need fettling with to fit correctly from new, thus a used one is easier to fit? If anyone could advise me on this it’d be much appreciated. Also if anyone happens to have an aftermarket exhaust for sale I may be interested.
I had a go-perform system on my 3.75, lovely tone and appearance. Mine was the road version but the race version is extensively used in the Supercup series.
Well worth having a look into
Moss where selling thhe Cobalt for the NC last week reduced to £180 from £275.I have same on my MK3 for a year now, lovely deep tone, not an isdue on the motorway noise in the cabin wise.Fitted a Cobra race to a mates in the Summer and that was lovely.Better fit than the Cobalt as a 5 peice system so plenty of adjustment.
As performance goes you wont notice anything other than it been all in the mind lol.I think even with a full system, ie header and decat you have to get a re map to see the benifit.I beleive the ecu thinks the original exhaust is still on the car,so a re map has to be done or you just get a very loud car.
I had a MK3 with full system and a remap behind me on a recent 250ml run around the lakes.I could hear the thing even when it wasnt in my mirrors.
Really tempted by the Cobalt as well. Do find the stock has a nice sound on my 2.0 compared to our other car but I’m a sucker for something with a little bit more bite and at under £190 delivered at the moment seems a bargain.
People selling used parts are deluded on pricing. I wouldn’t pay more than £100 for a used system. Stainless steel exhausts might not rust (they can), but welds can fracture (difficult to repair), baffles can rattle, folded joints can leak. No warranty.
The Cobalt systems are US made. No idea where the Go Perform systems are actually made; the website is bit vague on that. I would expect a UK made system to carry a lifetime warranty. Its a pity Collins Engineering (aka Mongoose) no longer covers the MX5; they made a first rate system back in the day.
I would be wary of any exhaust manufacturer making claims about their exhausts being used in a race series. It doesn’t imply any technical abilities on their part (the race series owners don’t carry out side by side comparisons of exhausts, and they couldn’t care less if the exhausts make the cars go faster or slower, they are more interested in the financial package offered by the supplier). It does imply that you might have reasonable expectation of technical support, if needed.
Thanks for the replys, gives me a few things to think about. Once I have gotten the odd bit of Christmas shopping I need to do out of the way I will see if I can get a shiny new exhaust for the cars Christmas present
Just another thumbs up for the Moss Cobalt, I put one on our 1996 1.8 last June, and just picked one up from them on a special offer a couple of weeks ago for the 1991 1.6.
Both fitted perfectly, straight on with no messing about. They sound lovely, nice deep idle, and gets progressively louder with more throttle, but never intrusive, to my taste spot on. Cruising its quite quiet. The 1.6 has had its cat removed too so sounds a bit more throatier…
The 1.6 still had the original exhaust that I’ve kept if anyone wants one, sounded a lot nicer than the 1.8 that’s a bit newer, quite a throaty idle with that Japanese rasp through mid to high revs. Couldn’t resist the chunky looking cobalt and deep sound though…
