Both have a new MOT and passed easily, there is little corrosion on either. Due to the arrival of a Land Rover Discovery (To tow a horse box, the expense begins!) we have run out of space on the drive.
The Mk1 is the wife’s so I havnt driven it much before but as an interim measure the Mk2 is on sorn whilst we decide what to do. No I have driven the mk1 more I have to say I prefere it, it drives and handles far better, and the reality is we would only get £1500 or so for either looking at the current market.
Judging by your post I think you know the answer already. Quite rightly, you want to keep the Mk1. As the original MX-5 as conceived by the breed’s creators it’s the purer car, and long-term will be worth more. I’m biased, obviously…
I’ve been told that the mk2 is more refined, more powerful, more solid - it’s more everything. Whereas the mk1 shakes and crashes over bumps and potholes, you have to work it harder to make the same progress and it’s older. But - and it’s a huge but - the mk1 is more connected, more involving, more fun. It also has pop-up lamps which makes it a clincher for me
Flip a coin. If it falls “heads” you keep the mk1. If it falls “tails” you keep the mk2. Flip the coin high in the air.
Before the coin lands you should get a sudden thought of what you want the outcome to be. And it will probably be to keep the mk1. I’ll just say one thing …
I’d say it depends whether you want the more refined things in your car.New Mini or old Mini?New Beetle or old Beetle? Mk1 Golf or Mk 3-4 or 5…The first ones are always best???It just depends on what you want
At the end of the day the MK2 is “my car” whilst the MK1 is the wife’s. Have priced it at £1950, which seems sensible for the low mileage, will just have to see if it sells.
If you can work it out to keep the two, best of both, happy days, but if it came down to it ,get rid of the Mk 2 and keep the Mk 1, but i would try and work it out, the problem sometimes is ,you just get to attached, i have 4 of my own, and a great understanding wife
