I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Tyres!
Hi all,
I have 2 sets of wheels so looking for some semi slick 17" tyres for track days and summer usage. Quite a lot options to choose from! Was wondering if anyone has any real life experience of running any particular brands on a track?
MRF ZTR’s currently on my NC1 when it’s on track (about the last dozen outings)
The previous dozen times where on Nankang NS-2R’s.
Both 215/45 17.
The MRF is the hands down (much) better tyre for track use.
The Nankang is I believe, usable on the road too (particularly) in the dry.
I still have a set of pre-owned Avon ZZR’s in my lock up to try later this year but they’ll have to be pretty darned good to knock out the MRF’s.
Just more info to fog your mind
Have used all of these, ZTR currently on my nd2 but first track day on them isn’t til end of the month.
Avon zzr are mega, useless in wet tho.
Ns2r I just think are useless full stop
I have not used Avon on anything for donkeys years primarily due to bad experience (but on supersport bikes)
So are the Avon ZZR decent then?
I was considering semislicks as well but was going towards Nankang NS-2R primarily as the as the Nankang AR-1 and the MRF aren’t road legal..
TYRES are very much a case of……
How much do you want to spend…V….how fast do you want to go!!
NS2R are better on track than a road Tyre but only by a small margin (cheap to buy)
MRF on the other hand are far superior but cost more…. That said they are worth the cost imo
One thing to remember is a Tyre that is good in the dry will be poor in the wet….and vice versa.
We run a brilliant wet Tyre but it’s £1300 for a set of 4 and if you run it in the dry it’ll last 20mins🙈
We use them on our Mazda MX5 endurance race car. We switched to them from AR1’s (also good tyres) and had the following results. Of course these are non-scientific as it depends on track temps, conditions, other factors etc. but this is genuinely my feedback on them:
They gave us, on average, a performance gain of one to two seconds a lap against the AR1. We now hold class lap records at Oulton International and Silverstone GP, tracks where the grip and consistency of a tyre have a huge impact. They are a more consistent tyre, the feel never changes dramatically in any way, they always have the grip where and when you expect it. They literally last twice as long before needing replacement (in a racing environment). We would be able to get 5-6 hours of driving at race pace on them before needing a new set. The AR1’s lasted roughly 3 hours before we felt like a new set were required.
The reason they are not mentioned nearly as often as the bigger brands are simply because they don’t yet have the recognition in Europe and not enough people have tried them. I have asked others about their experiences on them in different types of cars, heavier Porsche’s and BMW’s for example as well as front wheel drive stuff like clios. I have heard one comment of someone who preferred another tyre they had tried, but everyone else was singing their praises as much as I was. I genuinely believe they are the best value for money track-day tyre around. Worth a little bit more per corner than the AR1’s because they will last pretty much twice as long, and many other cars in our championship are now switching to them for this season.
I’m sure most people that have used them will speak positively about them based on what I’ve seen so far, definitely worth a try if you can get the right size of tyre! MOT Motorsport is the place to check.
Seems like we have a winner! More than I wanted to spend but when they are literally the only thing holding you to the road, you really can’t scrimp!
