I keep reading about shift boots or something like that. Is it worth changing these as a matter of course?
Thank you.

Clearly paid no attention. I have read it properly now and am going to check under console and make a choice as to change or not.
I actually need a shift book pack but the one for £40 from MX5 Parts are sold out - gearchange is a bit of a pig so checked rubber boot (gaiter) and torn to bits!
Any ideas where I can get a ‘pack from?’
Cheers,
Will
It will make a big difference to the feel of the gear change and if they are dead .you will also stop a lot of road noise and heat getting in,don’t forget to check the oil, while the gear shaft is out
M-m
Renewing the £3 bushing at the end of the gearlever also makes a surprising difference (in some cases, the bushing cracks, resulting in poor fast 2nd to 3rd changes). The gear turret oil is a seperate reservoir (60ml or so) from the rest of the gearbox. If the boot is split, its probable that the oil is contaminated. I used a syringe and tube to suck out the old oil, then effectively flushed it a few times with fresh gear oil.
Agreed
I have done as you say. Im still waiting on the upper shift boot but have sucessfully flushed the oil in the little resevoir, changed the nylon bush although mine was fine but I had a new one so put it in and then replaced the new lower boot. I have a new gear gaitor to fit too when the upper boot has arrived.
Currently though Im driving in a very noisey car, I can see the road, my arm is heated by the exhaust and I can see the prop-shaft spinning ha ha.
Well you could say poetry in motion oh dear I think I need a glass of red
