Signs of Head Gasket failure

I have an MK1 1.6 and had to replace the engine due to HG failure. Prior to that it sounded like it had an exhaust leak. The HG failed instantly and gave no signs.

The new engine now has the same exhaust leak noise from around the exhaust manifold. I replaced the manifold qnd gaslet today and it still sounds the same.

Is this a symptom of HG failure??

Sounds like to me that the manifold/gasket are not being put on and torqued down properly. That should not happen with a new engine straight away.
Something is definitely wrong in my opinion.

Check your oil filler cap & dipstick for a creamy mayo goo.
If you do have another HG fail…I reckon you’d smell it as well.
As mentioned above, set aside the HG concern until someone competent with the proper torque tools checks all the gas tight joints.

Thanks for the replies all.

Ive checked all the othwr symptoms and all seem fine.

Ive done since 2000 miles since the new (used) engine went in. It could well by the downpipe just sounds higher up.

I also torque all the nuts to 41 Nm myself with a new gasket. No change.
