I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:
In the summer I purchased 2011 Roadster with only 23000 miles on the clock. It is evident it has been well looked after by a club enthusiast. I’m in the process of removing/ treating visible rust underneath the vehicle. I’m using a rust converter, followed by primer, top coat & sealer.
I have been looking at applying the rust converter inside sills & cavities. Is this idea sensible & how do I go about achieving this?
The underside has been cleaned down. Can I access the sills to inject the rust converter by removing the ‘plastic plugs’ located underneath the sill, refer to photo? Or should I remove the plastic side skirts & interior door kick trim to access / use holes in sills above?
Buy a cheap endoscope from the likes of eBay. One which connects to the charging port on your phone. They are pretty cheap, and will give you a clear indication as to what’s going on in there.
You can get some access by pulling the internal sill kick plate off.
extension hose is very good for this. Look closely at the bottom of this picture and you can see the rust . And if inclined do the area beside the seatbelts, second picture.
Thats what stops you needing to cut and weld surely? You could always wash the wax out with cellulose thinners
Seriously, the sills and any thin walled enclosed areas is where you need to attend to. Yes, the subframes can rot over time, but they are much thicker and replacements can be bought for less than the cost of a fancy silencer!
The sill work is skilled labour and appropriately seriously expensive. An endoscope and wax treatment with 360 degree distribution costs about £100. Every MX-5 deserves that.
